A Question

What is the GPA Cutoff for transfer students applying to USMA? Is the cutoff a 3.5 GPA?
I am an international student from Ghana studying as a business major, at a respectable college in Wisconsin. I would like to attend one of these service academies, which has an international cadet program. I am very interested in serving my country. My extracurricular activities at my university (University of Wisconsin-oshkosh), are:
School job (I work at the Union)
Club and Intramural Soccer
International Business Club
International Student Association (Treasurer)
I know that I would need sponsorship for my governmemnt, but I would like to know the necessary GPA Cutoff, before I can consider applying.

I'm not sure that anyone on this board has experience with the application process for international cadets.
USMA aims to admit 10 international cadets each year, so the competition for these slots is fierce - you need to be aiming a lot higher than minimum standards and cutoffs.

Good luck!

Check with the USMA Admission Office. In addition to being fully qualified, I believe you would have to have the government of Ghana sponser you, both by recommending you and financing your time at West Point.

I believe the GPA cut off is a 2.0 (c average) college to apply for regular candidates. That is just to apply. I do not know the standard for international candidates. There is very little chance of getting in with a 2.0. There is no specific GPA for admission. Also be aware that there is no transferring. You have to do a 4-year program regardless.

What are the chances if you decide to transfer freshman year from a civi college to WP? Say you have it least a 3.0 and a sport and/or activities? Is it equal to those in high school applying or harder?

I ask because I feel I decided to try hard, a little late in high school and feel I don't have a chance. Now that my grades are going up, I got injured, so now my swimming career is going downhill. I saw the possible cadets at our local congressmen/military academy meeting here and everyone looking at WP(about 3 of em') looked to be extremely focused and such.

sorry for rambling and thread jacking, I just had to get it out, without wasting a thread.

I don't know exactly how to respond to your question about chances, but I am transferring from a civil university into the class of 2010. I did not apply in high school. You need to keep in mind that West Point does not accept transfer credit, so all the classes you take at college will either have to be validated or retaken once you get to WP. I am clearly no expert, but I'd say you need considerably more than a 3.0. Also remember that the admissions committee focuses on high school accomplishments for all candidates, so attending a university will not erase your high school gpa; you will still need to report that as well as your SAT scores. I know that's not exactly the answer you were looking for, but as I said, it's hard to gauge odds (and few people in this forum are probably qualified to anyway). If you have any more questions about transferring just let me know.

thanks

I guess there is always ROTC.
