A Realistic View of GW

i hope that when i’m old my life will be so interesting that i’ll go on websites for high school kids and pick fights with them! heheheheh because that’s exactly what you’re doing!

this is to all the prospective students who are about to read this thread. One of the most important things is that GW is what you make of it regardless of what people are saying on the internet. I just KNEW GW was right for me and I get to GW and…it’s right for me! Whaddya know! A miracle! But I was in the same position and read all of the negative things on this website, especially about all the kids who go here are rich and snobby. Well, this year I’ve met two friends that I can picture myself having for the rest of my life and neither are snobby or rich. You will find the kind of people you attract. If you are not a snobby, rich, kid, you won’t find yourself surrounded by them. Simple as that.

As for bureaucracy, I’ve never EVER had a problem with that, and I had to file quite a few bits of extra paperwork.

Long story short, I chose GW before I even made it to the campus, and I don’t regret my decision one bit.

I have to say, I agree with every main point made in the original post, though granted, I have only been at GW for one semester (and luckily I still have time to change my mind!).

I actually like GW a lot. I know many people who are happy here, and not just those in the poli sci, IR, business, etc. programs. However, this school is not for me, just as many schools are not right for a single person. Some ideas that haven’t been addressed:

CONS:

 • The performing arts programs are terrible, and professors are reluctant to focus any attention on you in class or onstage unless you are part of the arts scholarship program and getting paid to perform and made them/the arts programs look good.
 • If you’re not on work study, it’s impossible to get a job on campus. And many (though I admit, not all) paid internships are scooped up by the university and advertised as “work-study only.” If you’re not work study, good luck finding a job- you’ll need that metro station on campus to get there.
 • Greek life is MUCH more prominent on campus than whatever percentage Admissions has written down in their brochures (22%?). I can’t go anywhere without hearing about Greek life and seeing letters on clothing and signs. I have felt so much pressure to rush this year, it’s ridiculous.

PROS:

 • GWU gave me more AP/SATII credit than any other school I applied to. As a result, I will be a junior at the end of two semesters, allowing me to graduate in three years and save some $$ (if I stay, that is).
 • I do not do drugs or alcohol and I have never felt ANY pressure to drink on campus. Yes, I go out with my friends and party, but feel a lot more comfortable than my older sibling at a small LAC did her freshman year.
 • I absolutely love the size of this school- it’s big enough that you don’t feel trapped or contained and running into the same people, but small enough that you still make connections you wouldn’t expect (“Oh, Julie lives in your dorm? She’s in my French class!”). However, to each his/her own.

I would also like to add that I know a someone who wanted to go to GW for about a year and a half, got in EDI, and decided after a month that it was not a good fit for her. In short, you’re not going to know what type of school you want until you actually GO TO COLLEGE. I ended up liking GW more than I thought I would, but though I’m going to give it some more time, I’m anticipating moving to a different school in the fall.

Oh, would also like to add onto the money factory comment:

GW lost my first semester’s tuition check. And then tried to charge us both a fee for the lost check AND a whole other semester. Beware…

My goodness. I am, quite frankly, apalled by the attitudes of some of the students here who objected to OP’s view. I am a hs senior and hyeonjlee is absolutely right; you’re painting GW in a much more negative light by jumping to personal attacks and dismissing the views of those who don’t agree with you about GW by making irrational assumptions about their background. What’s WORSE is you turn it on hyeonjlee when she/he was just pointing out the flaws that you clearly couldn’t see.

Totally agree with lizmane, too.

Love GW. As far as departments, I would have to pint the worse one is the Statistics dept! Horrendous. Nobody seems to speak clear English, and unfortunately many of us have to take it. If GW could screen those teachers better it would be appreciated.

Well Ruby, thanks for sharing. Planning to apply, or just ■■■■■■■■?

Can you take a look at this and give me some intake on it.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/850485-how-am-i-doing.html

Ever since freshman year i can’t take my eyes of this college, I will be 20 minutes away from my parents house, I love D.C. and have it memorized after living near it and Its for sure the college choice.
I Plan on getting a interview and hoping to pick up on meeting some professors.
Maybe grab 2 emails and email them once or twice a month or two (don’t want to bug them)
Also doing early decision and not applying for financial aid, right now I am thinking of getting a Bachelor in Science and expanding towards into Two Masters
(Management of IT) and (Undecided)

Appreciate the time

The Questions
I heard from my sisters friends that the 2 people or 6 people dorms are better then the 4 people dorms, is this true?

I Did track and love soccer, is there a club where i can play soccer without the tough competition on who is good?

I was told that on a interview i should not make my discussion about “Oh i like your college because…” but more like express my own strengths and abilities that would synergies with the school and more like why I deserve to go to the school, and is it ok to say I am nervous in the beggining?

Josh, I think your interviewer is right about what you should discuss. Most people will have the same answers for why the school is their choice; access to D.C., decent academics, good food, etc. What is unique to you is the effect that you will have on the school and that the school will have on you as a result of your attendance.

It’s same with the “nervous” thing; a lot of students are nervous, so there is no need to say that you are. Even if it wasn’t normal, there is still no reason to say that you’re nervous. It isn’t something that will support your admittance.

In all honesty, I’m not sure what you mean by “discussion.” I am assuming you are talking about your essay. And if you are talking about your essay, make sure someone else proofread’s it first. There are many spelling and grammatical errors in your post that would greatly damage the credibility of any formal essay.

I would have to agree with the OP. I do love GW, but mostly because of the social scene. The academics are a bit of a joke.

um…i got accepted into GWU and gtown and i would like to know which has better science departments. i have heard rumours abt gtown scienece classes being really disorganized. i would really like ur inputs
