A&S to CALS transfer

how difficult is it to transfer from A&S to CALS? I know the site says to transfer you have to maintain a 2.5 gpa which doesn't SEEM difficult, but I've heard otherwise.

I wanted to major in communications advertising but unfortunately I applied to cornell before I decided that this was what I wanted to do with my life and obviously, I can't major across colleges. so should I just keep my A&S major (which would be Asian Studies) and minor in comm? I don't know if a comm minor will get me a degree. ahhh, confusion.

of course, I'm only an HS senior right now so I have some time to decide if that's really what I wanna do with my life when I get there, but assuming that I do want to do comm advertising, what should I do?

thanks !

You do not get a separate degree for your minor. It will, however, be designated on your final transcript.

I wouldn’t worry about internal transfer just yet because you can’t initiate the process until you get here. I also suggest taking a Comm class or two before making the decision to switch.

Just a little tidbit: my friend majored in Latin and did an AEM minor and is now working for an advertising firm :)

Hey dewdrop87, how did your friend minor in an AEM subject, I thought you could only do that if you were CALS, isn’t Latin in CAS?

see the other threads for this answer, but i’ll say it here…

many minors like the Intl. Relations, Law & Society, Inequality Studies are open to anyone at Cornell…

minors like Spanish and AEM are officially only for students within that college BUT you can still take the courses and earn it unofficially…i dont think it shows up on your transcript but the courses do show up and you can get a letter from the DEAN or head of the minor saying you completed the coursework required for that minor…

Thanks for the clarification RB…I really need to refresh myself on what minors are open only to CALS students :)

My friend did take enough classes to fulfill the requirements for an AEM minor.

Damn dewdrop87 you got me all excited I thought the website made a mistake and you could haha. Thanks for the info ResurgamBell.

Hahaha…sorry for getting your hopes up!!

I’m wondering if this policy is new because I once spoke with an AEM faculty member and she mentioned that the department realized people were applying to other majors and then declaring a double major or minor in AEM. They were trying to reduce the amount of people using this “backdoor.”

LOL haha well for me I’m planning on taking all the classes anyways so I wouldnt mind getting credit for the minor.

My daughter told me it’s difficult to take AEM courses if you are not in the school. She’s had to take similar courses in the Hotel school instead.

wait, so you can’t minor across colleges?

hmmm, maybe I should just switch to CALS then? but I know they have a math req and I suck at math haha

You can minor (with a few exceptions) across colleges. You cannot double major across colleges.

Yeah look up the specific program you want to minor in and see if they let you do it across colleges, the only one I’ve seen that won’t let you is AEM -_-x

^ ohh okay. well I don’t want to do AEM anyway lol, so that’s good. I guess I’ll just ask loads of questions when I go there.

thanks everyone^__^

yeah AEM tries to keep itself to its own.

AEM (as well as other colleges around) offers a summer business certificate as well

[Cornell/AEM Business Management Certificate : Cornell Summer Session](<a href=“Summer Session - Courses & Programs - Courses for Credit”>Summer Session - Courses & Programs - Courses for Credit)

Whoa that program you just showed me looks pretty kick ass o_o
Any insight towards the program? Would you happen to know anyone that has gone through it themselves/any comments they might have about it?

no i do not know anything about that AEM program in particular…but many top schools offer summer certificates in business…you’ll see ads for them on facebook and cornell sun…

i imagine it’s pretty useful (especially for those in majors far from business (like art, history, etc). )

haha after doing a little bit of research on my own, as well, I think that I will definitely try to transfer to CALS
thanks for all the help :D
