go back and read Lindz's post #2. BruinsJEW has had mostly bad stuff to say about UMD; hopefully the transfer plans worked out. No school is absolutely right for everyone; if you are going into it feeling so concerned and negative, I think you're setting yourself up guaranteeing that you'll be unhappy there. Find someplace else where you feel safer, and where you think you'll be happier. I used to think Chapel Hill was an idyllic setting; go figure.

I'm at UMiami now. Yes, security was one of my issues as I discussed. And to be quite honest, people need to be crazy to think that UMD is safe as most other universities. I did not know daily robberies was normal and when victims lived in my dorm on my floor and were escorted back by the cops one night after being severely beaten up and robbed, then I guess I have a different opinion than most other morons who walk on Baltimore Ave. after midnight because they cannot wait for the bus. There bound to be robbed one day.

Miami is a much more safer environment. The campus has some of the best security in the nation. From car patrols to undercover guards on Segways. I can roam the campus at whatever time I want and not have to worry about being alive the next morning. I spend many night at the library WHICH I COULDNT DO AT MARYLAND.

I live on campus right now and to say that you get crime alerts everyday is an outright lie.... maybe when you lived on campus, you lived in fear for your life, but I just think its wrong to get some people paranoid about living on campus. I just checked my emails and searched for the crime alerts... I've received 8 in the past 4 weeks... 1 was a correction and 1 was an alert about an arrest so really 6. Crime happens everywhere. Murders?? ***?? The big thing is though, that the crimes were all off campus or by fraternity row.... If you stay on North Campus, you have almost nothing to worry about... I've walked by myself plenty of times at about midnight... There was one person who I know who almost got mugged.... Where was he? On Fraternity Row. Basically all I'm trying to say is that if you stay on campus or if you go down to a frat and walk in a group larger than 2.. you shouldn't have to live in fear and be a punk like BruinsJEW.... So to all of you parents out there worried about crime and saftey on campus, there are shuttles, and Nite Ride, and blue emergency thingies and hardly any crime on the campus itself...

^^^^ You know, 8 crime alerts in a month is like.. pretty terrible in my opinion. That means there are like ~70 crime alerts a year.

Well actually it was 6 crime alerts. But still the campus itself is safe and there are lots of things to do to make sure that you are not a victim of any sort of crime. How many crimes do you think get committed in a city? even if it was 70 crime alerts a year, that still isn't bad, especially if they are OFF campus... Even if you don't feel safe, catch a shuttle, call Nite Ride, they can pick you, call a cab.... Can some other current students help me out..
