I'm a rising senior currently with a 4.0 GPA in HS. I've recently started my junior year, and here is my schedule:

AP Macro
AP Calc AB (school doesn't have BC)
AP Physics B (school doesn't have C)
Teaching Assistant for honors physics
AP Lit
AP Gov
AP Comp Sci

That's my day, in that order (obviously with lunch and gym thrown in there)
However, I've been thinking about replacing Macro with newspaper, due to workload issues as well as wanting to write on the newspaper. Would this really affect anything? I'm planning on being an engineering major and am planning on applying to Cornell ED. Thanks!

Well I think very few people would want to keep a difficult schedule if they can change it. I definitely want to drop it for newspaper, but I was more worried about the adverse effects. I see people here with like, 8 AP classes in a single year, etc. I guess I’d be fine with /only/ 5 this year :p

Any other input before I go through with it? I really want to do the switch, but the perfectionist inside of me is screaming not to. It’s like…if I don’t get into Cornell, I’d always wonder whether or not keeping Macro would have helped or not. It’s stupid, but that’s what I’m worried about.

If you school is teaching AP macroeconomics over a whole year, that course is probably pretty easy. Introductory macroeconomics in universities is typically either a one semester course, or part of a one semester introductory economics course that covers both microeconomics and macroeconomics.

AP computer science A is similar in this respect – it may be viewed as a one semester course, or less than a one semester course. AP calculus AB also covers one semester’s worth of material over a year. So it is not like your schedule is currently unmanageably hard.

Either way, you have plenty of APs. I’m a firm believer in doing what interests you, rather than letting the admissions process consume you. If you want to get involved with newspaper, do it.

I’m not going to argue that my schedule as it stands is overwhelming as per the classes curriculum. However, as APs, they are expected to assign a fair bit of homework, which can add up to quite a lot daily when you have 6. I think my guidance counselor and macro teacher are trying their hardest to stop me from switching, but I still think I’m still leaning towards doing it.

Welp; going into the last day I have to decide, and I still don’t know what to do. I think I’ll definitely enjoy it more if I take newspaper, but having macro would still look better. Ugh. @_@

I had the same issue you did, I just could not decide. But I talked it over with 3 students from my school who recently went or were accepted to Princeton, Harvard, and Harvard and they each took 4, 5, and 5 respectively during their senior years. (The first wanted to take regular art and did not want an early bird, the second just opted for photography and band, and the third wanted to take a regular management class because that is what they were interested in).

They said to take what you care about, especially since you already have a rigorous enough schedule, it will not really rest on that one, extra ap that you did or did not take. They won’t even notice. The important part is doing well in whatever courses you do take, having some sort of passion, and still fitting in time for testing and college apps in there. It could even be a good thing, like hey, this kid took something rather interesting their senior year…hence why many schools want to see an unusual class every now and then (art, music, film, newspaper, photography ect…) to tell them that you were dynamic, and not a robot. :)

I would say take newspaper, if that is what you like.
