A+ schools for a B+ student (am I being too picky?)

Yes, it's me again, but I still need help. My guidance counselor says that she wants my college list by the end of this week, but right now that list only has two schools. Does anyone know of any college(s) that meet(s) the folowing criteria?

Accepts B+ students

Is relatively liberal and gay-friendly

Is in the south, northeast, or midwest

Has less than 3,000 students

Has an intellectual atmosphere

Is known for being cheap or having good financial aid

Official college list:
- Agnes Scott College (already applied)
- Mt. Holyoke College

Colleges that I'm considering:
- College of Wooster
- Goucher College
- St. John's College
- Hiram College
- Wells College
- New College of Florida
- Hendrix College

Colleges that I considered but decided against:
- Bryn Mawr College (could never get in)
- Smith College (CNGI)
- Bates College (CNGI)
- Sweet Briar College (too conservative)
- All TN colleges and universities (too conservative, too close to home)
- Connecticut College (arrogant admissions officer)
- Hampshire College (weird FL admissions requirement)
- Guilford College (65% syphilis rate)

New ideas are much appreciated! Commenting on my lists as they are is also great.

Much obliged.

Denison University?

If you are applying to Mt. Holyoke, why rule out Smith for “could never get in”? The two regularly flip-flop admits (admitted to one, denied/WL’ed to the other).

I think you could get good FA from Wooster, maybe Hendrix and Hiram. Goucher gives the real money to A students that it wants to attract.

We could help more if you gave us an UW GPA (B+ can mean a lot of different things), test scores, whether you’re looking for need- or merit-based FA, and what your EFC is vs. how much your family can pay.

Wheaton college (MA not IL)

Check out Wittenberg–very generous merit money, lovely campus, great campus life. I know several students there who love it

“Guilford College (65% syphilis rate)”

^^^ Where the source of that lovely bit of info?

Beloit, Knox and Lawrence fit all criteria very very well. I am surprised you haven’t considered them. PM for more info especially about beloit and Knox.

Definitely throw Ohio Wesleyan on that list, especially with the free app and the fact that they take test scores straight from the transcript.

A good short list would be:

Kalamazoo
Earlham
Allegheny
Beloit
Knox
UNC-Asheville
Bennington
Sarah Lawernce
U Mary Washington

I went through my Fiske guide again tonight, and found these delightful little schools:
Allegheny
Susquehanna U
Clark U
Kalamazoo
Beloit
Knox

Warren Wilson
Bennington
Lawrence U

Grinnell
Manhattanville
Hollins U
Randolph
Alma

Great minds think alike, huh? BTW, Mt. Holyoke is much less self-selecting than Smith, so there is a difference in what kind of student each will accept.

I will be narrowing my list down based on the presence or absence of undergraduate research opportunities at each school.

Free app at OW? Seriously?

I’m only reporting what I hear from the Smith/Holyoke forums. The Holyoke people would be quite angry at your insinuation that MTH is significantly easier to get into than Smith. I think there is probably a small difference in selectivity, but not enough for you to not even apply to Smith.

Elon has 5000 students and by design a tuition that runs about 10K less than other schools. +70% of students come from OOS (most from NE). Good luck on your quest…

Guilford College really has a 65% syphilis rate? That’s creepy.

I did a quick internet search and found nothing about the college having a 65% syphilis rate, but a couple of articles about syphilis in Guilford County (Greensboro, NC), which happens to be home to a number of colleges/universities - - including UNC-Grensboro.

Flagler College is cheap and has good financial aid. However, it may not be liberal- I am not sure.

Le Moyne College. It’s a little bigger than you’re looking at (3400, about 2700 undergrad and 700 grad)…but it’s a great school! I go there, so if you want something more specific about the school, just PM me and I’ll let you know!

If you liked the looks of Hendrix, you should also consider Rhodes College in Memphis and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Those three schools are very similar and often have overlapping applications. Rhodes probably won’t be as liberal as Millsaps, and the greater Memphis and Jackson areas certainly aren’t predominantly liberal.

^ I’ve heard that Rhodes is more liberal than Millsaps, actually–that R is solidly moderate while M leans conservative. Hendrix is the most liberal of the three. None are in predominantly liberal locales.

Cornell College of Iowa

Goucher and Clark are good bets. Consider Hobart and Alfred if snow is no issue

Check out the websites of Colleges That Change Lives and the Annapolis Group

The college of new jersey has great academics, very reasonably priced
beautiful campus but has 5000 students
my daughter just started there as a freshman
best of luck
