A SOLID PRE-MED PROGRAM or BS/DO ROUTE???

<p>okay well, I am done with being a dentist lol, seriously, I only applied since my parents told me to, and I really only have a passion for medicine...</p>

<p>You know parents and their back up plans, and they kind of insisted that I must apply in order to have more opportunities...</p>

<p>So, I'm from Chicago area and am debating whether I go to a solid premed college or BS/DO route...</p>

<p>Nova Southeastern University: BS/DO program
Requirements: 24 MCAT, 3.3 GPA to stay in program with reserved seat in med school of NSU-COM, grades: A-C+</p>

<p>OR PREMED program:</p>

<p>Knox College-Rush premed program requires A and B in all premed courses and then interview freshman year, also 100% med school acceptance rate last year: 2007 High GPA needed to compete for program</p>

<p>Loyola or U of I-decent premed program I hear, plus research and all that jazz, typical in my opinion</p>

<p>UIC -I'm pretty sure I didn't get into GPPA:( oh well, that's life, you win some, you lose some:) So it would just be Honors Program...</p>

<p>***THINGS TO CONSIDER: I live in IL and the premed colleges are in IL while Nova is in Ft. Lauderdale, FL -21 hours away, HOWEVER Nova is actually cheaper for my family due to scholarships and its amazingly affordable tuition vs Loyola/UIC/Knox (Knox and Loyola are offering me little scholarships)</p>

<p>Also, the Nova program offers me a guaranteed seat already, but the other programs will be more difficult with more work required for higher MCAT, GPA, and anything else...Nova might be easier for me, but that's not to say it's a joke at that school, since all colleges require effort, but some colleges like NW require more effort...</p>

<p>WHAT DO YOU THINK, I WILL IN THE END BASE MY DECISION AFTER TALKING TO STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOLS/VISIT SCHOOLS/WITH MY FAMILY, BUT YOUR INPUT IS ENCOURAGED AND APPRECIATED:)</p>

<p>I'll say what I've always said, I think it's silly to lock yourself into a BS/DO when you have the opportunity to go on a solid traditional route. But that's just my thinking.</p>

<p>So, on this forum, besides the sticky posts, it lists 20 other posts. 5 of the 20 are your threads.</p>

<p>And honestly, if you spent half as much effort as you expend posting on this forum on your academics in college, you will find yourself in better standing in four more years.</p>

<p>lol thats wut my parents would say, and I swear this is the only week I will be doing this since it's spring break, then I will be checking it rarely due to other stuff I have like school/activities/sports</p>

<p>anyways, i am sorry if you don't like my posts, but 3 people PM'ed me about the bs/do programs and thanked me for my help</p>

<p>yo futuredr, i think u gotta look at the big picture and ask urself wat you really want. deep down there, is it the MD or the DO that you really want? </p>

<p>i dunno about you, but if i had the choice between MD or DO, id pick MD. and ur best chance of getting ur MD would be a school with a solid premed prog</p>

<p>premed... do schools have low mcat requirements and most do programs require you to take the mcat anyway.. if you're taking the mcat you might as well have a better undergrad experience than being locked down by the program... i'd elaborate but its 3am</p>

if you can get into a bs/do program, keep up your flame throughout undergrad and you can get into med school.</p>

<p>then, enter medschool, and never look back.</p>

<p>lol I am gonna go against all of you.......huzzahh!!! (in the words GoBroncos) lol because I have done research about the school I want to go to and Nova has a reputation of setting up people to be successful in the medical field, since they already have like 6 grad schools from medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and much more</p>

<p>my point is, before you all, suggest premed school, consider Nova's undergrad program, and that's my problem, I'm trying to find out more about it, but all I can learn from is the website and a few people I talked to online/phone who go there, (I'm visiting the school in in a few weeks) but anyways here are links if you want to judge Nova's undergrad curriculum/programs:</p>

<p>I really don't know how to judge a premed program except looking at its programs, resources, and opportunities...Someone from the school is going to call me today about premed stats, but many people have said that doesn't matter, it only depends on what you do...which is true</p>

<p>thanks for the input, really appreciate it, I'm probably going to Nova's 7 year BS/DO program because I'm going to try and turn my MAIN WORRY into a MOTIVATION FACTOR- The MCAT 24 is what I'm nervous about but I am choosing the program with the higher MCAT score in order to encourage myself to do better on the MCAT/study more and hopefully score high enough to get into a medical school in IL-where I am from....wut do you all think?</p>

<p>make sure that its possbile to go to a non affiliated med school..do you get the bs degree from nova in 3 years? because i know with some schools you'll be in med school the 4th year but simultaneously recieve the bs degree at that time-- meaning if you went to a non affiliated med school you would have to complete the undergraduate in 4 years and not three</p>

<p>that's so weird you said that, I actually emailed the same exact question to the program director a few hours ago, and will find out soon, because that is important, great minds think alike lol</p>

<p>I found out that yeah you can graduate and get a BS degree in 3 years as long as you fulfill 120 credits in that time, but if you go their Med school and do the program then its only 90 credits....who knows I might fall in love with Nova and Ft. Lauderdale?</p>

<p>yeah our school is the same futureDr08, if you cant finish within 3 years, then those who go to the med school will have credit transfered back from the med school to get their ba or bs diploma</p>

<p>yeah its how some of these programs work, I'd take any beach/sunny warm paradise weather over Chicago's crazy weather...but I will miss Chicago:)</p>

<p>I have to get 120 credits in order to graduate in 3 years..but I have 16 already with AP credit:)</p>
