I am a pretty good golfer and nationally ranked. However, i tried since freshman year to join the golf team, yet the golf coach keeps on saying that they have no space and always says i should try again next year. Since i couldnt join the golf team, yet i am ranked nationally, should i just not put golf on the EC part of the application

If you spend a lot of time on golf, which I assume you do, it is definitely an EC and should be listed. If you are ranked and have some good showings in tournaments, you might be able to golf in college. It should be a prominent part of your application.

u dont need to play golf wuith school to count it as an EC. an EC is anything u do thats not like academically related to what u do at school. of course it counts and you can still get recruited if u are no on the school team =D many do every year

Heck ya dude. Ranked Nationally? That's awesome.

Got any tips? =)

Oh ..just lots of practice man. Well, im not high ranked but I finish on average around 25th place out of around 300 golfers per tournament

I'm confused- you're nationally ranked and your high school coach is foolish enough to not get you on his team?

i know...he is a little crazy. He thinks im lazy even though i play better golf than him. well, maybe he just doesnt like me or sumthin

looks like someone's a little jealous

You don't make any sense at all. If you were nationally ranked you'd be getting a lot of recognition from your peers, you wouldn't NOT be allowed on your high school team.

EDIT: And how do they nationally rank golfers anyhow? This sounds too fishy to me.

Nationally Ranked eh? So am I! I am currently top 250 in nation. Do you play any tours i.e. AJGA, FCWT, IJGT, etc... Yes golf does help immensely. Also goflers have an advantage because they basically know where they are going to go by the end of junior summer. I have talked this over with many people and if you are a good golfer then it adds about .5 to GPA and 150-200 points to SAT. So keep on practicing. High School GOlf does matter. If you are team captain, that is always a good thing, leadership in anything is great. Good Luck!

Having watched what goes on in basketball at a HS, this doesn't surprise me. HS coaches can have attitude and not pick someone for the team no matter how good or talented. The coach at a particular HS may have no desire to win at basketball and his attitude transfers to the team. Despite what parents say, he is protected by the Athletic Director and won't be removed. He may not play the most talented kids because that isn't the way he's done it for twenty six years, he is teaching "life lessons in humility and teamwork" and his methodology doesn't tolerate stars or winning for the sake of a win. So good luck getting noticed by a college coach. The principal is a left over hippie who doesn't believe in competition and despises school spirit. IT shows. Only 10% of the student body attend games. Political correctness gone mad. Thank god he's retiring this year.
