A to Z: What To Bring To College

dont know if this has already been discussed, but does anyone have experience with shipping weird shaped stuff cross-country?

as in, what carrier is best and will it be hella expensive?

ive got like, a skimboard, golf clubs, lax sticks, ironing board, etc that i cant exactly take on a plane...

one thing not on kate's list that ended up being very very useful for me last year were a pair of rainboots. in the south, it rains frequently during the winter and spring, so there's no reason to ruin tennis shoes or sandals when you can buy a reasonably priced pair at target or jcrew.

i put together this list: http://www.freewebs.com/nathansc/masterdormchecklist.htm

i can understand wanting all that stuff gochristymihos, but you really don't need an ironing board - your desk/a wall/a roommate (KIDDING) - something else can be used just as easily. Check and see if you can rent the sports equipment at your school - it's highly possible.

Kate shouldn't the person also bring a printer for his/her desktop?

nathan thanks for the master checklist... im wayyyy to lazy for something like that... but bored enough to use it.

cheers!

A few tips:

Start getting everything together a few weeks ahead of time

Sit down (do this about a week before you leave), go through the list and box the things up. Then leave the stuff in the box so you don't have to worry about forgetting something.

A few Ziplock plastic containers are very useful to hold items like shampoo, deodorant, soap.

If you haven't bought some of those electronics you'll need yet...check out the deal sites like GottaDeal, Slickdeals, Stealdeals, Fatwallet (Stuff from Bestbuy, Circuit City, CompUSA is expensive!) And if you can wait to buy a certain item, wait till Black Friday.

This is my personal list. I made it so I saw what I needed to purchase & what I already have in my house. I'm also using it as a checklist and bolding items that I have already set aside. Keep in mind that I am a guy, but I think most of these items are useful for anyone.

kateapollo gets my vote for CC MVP - thanks for eliminating "debates" with my organizationally-challenged son over this last week before he leaves!

geesh...people call this spam and solicitation? Whats the big deal?
anyways, good job on coming up with so many things, although it would have been nice to have a list of needs and then wants...

regardless, thats hours and hours of typing.

....anyways, Definately make sure that all of your stuff is locked up!!!!!

This was a great list! I went to college in a small town, where the college bookstore was extremely pricey but sometimes the only place to buy specific school supplies. Since then, a Staples has opened up in the neighboring city, but if you don't have transportation (and it's not on the main bus routes), you're stuck at the bookstore or waiting for delivery of an on-line order.

From my experience, decide if you like to take notes in a spiral notebook or a 3-ring notebook. Buy 5 or 6 per semester, and take them with you. Also, invest in cheap pens in the box by the dozen--don't even mess with the $12/box pens--they'll be "borrowed" and never returned within the first week. For some reason, no one steals the cheap ones.

Kitchen supplies that fit well in you dish bin:
dish scrubber (whether it has a handle or is the Dobie type)
hot pot (most dorm rooms allow hot pots but nothing else--you can make tea, mac and cheese, and soup in it)
a good kitchen knife
a small selection of flatware (try a thrift store for a hodge podge mix)
a few big
zip bags--gallon and quart size--store everything from food to toiletries to who knows what

I was a theatre arts major, and I wish I had taken these supplies with me:

cordless drill (at least 18V) with extra batteries and charger--all engraved with your name or school ID or drivers license number
an adjustable wrench
individual theatrical make-up kit
wire stripper
pastels
watercolors
paint brushes
T-Square
eraser guide
architect's rule
tablet pc with Office Professional, PhotoShop, and AutoCad--most current versions
computer must be as good as you can afford, because you won’t be upgrading it until after you graduate
flash/USB drive

BEFORE BRINGING ANYTHING FOR YOUR ROOM, talk to your roommate and find out what s/he is bringing. You don't want two TV's, two phones, two rugs, two sets of curtains, etc. (However, you should bring your own computer. Papers are usually do all around the same time for most classes.)

"but you really don't need an ironing board - your desk/a wall/a roommate (KIDDING) - something else can be used just as easily. "

That's if you iron at all. Most people learn how to get their laundry out of the dryer without wrinkles after ironing for the first 2 weeks.

true. I bought an iron but I never use it except to iron something that REALLY needs ironing but most of everthing is fine as long as you take it right out of the dryer and hang it up or fold it carefully.

You have NO idea how long ive been looking for a list like this!!! I LOVE YOU!

I took the liberty of backing this thing up on my own website. I gave the OP credit for it of course! But here is the same list with a printable version of it as well. :)

http://teaghue.googlepages.com/collegematerials

If a school provides furniture - desk, desk chair, etc - but you have your own that you would rather use, can you do that? I'm sure it depends - but I would really rather have my own chair than the one they have, which is probably huge. For some reason, god knows why, every college desk chair I have ever seen is way too big for the room it's in.

My son and his roommates brought their own desk chairs - big swiveling tipping, comfortable chairs. They then put the plain wooden chairs in closets or in the living room. Hopefully, you will be spending alot of time in it!

Cleaning chemicals of some sort! And air freshener! Trust me, after spilling a whole grande hot chocolate from starbucks all over white carpet...and then using an entire bottle of Resolve to get most of the stain out...your room will smell like a hair salon. Too strongly.

Does anyone have any ideas about how much clothes is too much to bring to college? I'm a total fashion addict and I know I'll have some trouble fitting all my clothes, shoes and bags into the dorm closets. What about designer clothes? Is it safe to bring them?

10-14 days of clothes. Laundry is a pain in the ass so you won't want to do it too frequently, but if you bring too much clothing there will be NOWHERE for extra. You'll have shoes and suitcases and other things that will take up your limited space. Choose wisely on what you take and rotate things when you go home for a break.

I would say take as much clothes as you think you can cram in your closet and drawers. I'm really pathetic about doing laundry (to give you a scenario, I did laundry when I came home for thanksgiving and didn't do it again until I came home for Christmas break) and by the last day of finals in December, I was pretty much down to either wearing pajamas or dress clothes, the only things I had left that were clean. So, if you think you won't do laundry very often, or even if you think you will (though you probably won't... it's expensive!), take as many as you can stuff in your tiny little closet.
