i don't know if it was mentioned, but RAINBOOTS are definitely something to invest in for rain and melting snow.

smiley - That's probably something to look into. Thanks for bringing it up.

Wow, that's amazingly helpful. Thanks, Kate!

Was anyone else forcibly reminded of Harry Potter when they clicked on the link for the footlocker?

The RI equivalent of "weaksauce" is "souped." No one else (that I know of) knows what it means except for RI kids. It means "wicked excited" or "psyched" or "overjoyed." For example, I am souped to go to college!

Just a fun fact.

Wow, I didn't know that "souped" is only used in RI! Just like using "mad" as a synonym for "very" hahaha

I've never heard someone use the term "souped" before.
But, "mad" I have heard. ie. "That was MAD good"

^We use mad sometimes...ie "Mad skills."

lol...ode to the joys of regional dialect.

YIKES!! Guys, really. Dorms are small. Bring only what you really need. If something comes up, buy it.

And don't forget: Don't leave home without your American Express Card!

yeah, maybe if my parents paid for my credit card i'd have one..

Lol. Assuming that we all have a CC.

WOW. Thank you. this list is very useful. :)

Hey guys, this list was very helpful in preparing me for college this year. Now that I'm settled and all, I would have to say that many of these things are nice to have, but it is really an inconvenience to carry them throughout. I would stick to the basics (wallet, cell, important documents, clothes, bedding, bath/toiletries, office supplies, laptop). I looked back over the list I made before I moved in. I made tremendous changes to it recently and the list was halved.

Also keep in mind that things also accumulate while you're in college, so you have to work things out with the limited space provided.

2cents.

credit cards are seriously helpful. i never carry cash, because if you lose your wallet, you're out a ton of money. if you lose your wallet and you only use a credit card, you call your provider, have it canceled, and there's no issues.
i don't know what i'd do without mine. the key, of course, is to only charge what you can legitimately afford. and plus, if you get one with some kind of point/reward system, you can receive additional benefits. like with my card, i can get a check for up to several hundred dollars after a certain period of time/amount spent. it's really helpful. i would highly recommend credit cards to busy college kids who might just lose a wallet...
and no, my parents definitely don't pay for my credit card, my full-time job does.

i appreciate this list. i had one of my own, but going through the OP's allow me to add a few things i hadn't thought of (like a variety of religious texts - i can see those being really helpful in my college career, or a handheld vacuum).

for those stating that it's best to buy everything when you get there except for, like, your clothes, i agree with everyone who's said that when you buy things is entirely contingent on your distance from the school + personal preferences. i'm highly conscious of the aesthetics of my surroundings and any old sheets on sale at BB&B or the one lamp that they offer in the bookstore just wouldn't do. i'm buying all this stuff in advance and my family's renting a uhaul to drive it to my school (about two hours away). otherwise, my dorm wouldn't feel comfortable or livable and certainly not like a home away from home.

Now that we have a list of things to buy, I'm wondering how much does it all usually cost? For incoming frosh?

I'm putting a $1500 limit on myself for buying dorm stuff. Is that too much/ too little? $500 of the limit goes strictly to clothes. Is that too much/little for clothes?

How much did/do you spend? What would be a total waste of time to buy?

I was going to start another thread...but I figured this was close enough :).

I'm thinking of sending gift cards for haircuts at some place near the school so there's a chance my long-haired boy won't be ridiculous by the tiem he comes home.
