A to Z: What To Bring To College

This should definitely be updated, stuff like an address book and CDs have become obsolete in the last 4 years.

It’s not like it’s hard to take off what you don’t need…I just copy/pasted the list into MS Word, erased what I knew I didn’t need and added stuff where necessary.

yeah but there’s stuff on there nobody has anymore. :)

ninja sword and throwing stars.
kevlar vest for protection

Lol!! I still use both of these. I only started using an Ipod this year, and that was when my brother’s “ruined” Ipod wasn’t good enough for him anymore. It still worked perfectly fine, so I figured why not, and now it’s mine. But I still use my CDs in my car. I love my CD player, it sounds amazing, and whenever I’ve tried using one of those Ipod adaptors for cars they sound like complete crap! So yeah, CDs are coming with me. Plus I still like CDs better than digital downloading anyway.

I also use the address book that comes with the planner I have. I’m grateful for it whenever I don’t have my phone around or for old numbers I don’t keep in my phone. And I’m sure I’ll be glad to have it for the fateful day when my phone might- gulp die. At least I won’t have to make one of those stupid “omg! I need numbers!!” facebook groups.

October - I know exactly what you mean! I’ve used an ipod for years, but I almost always listen to CDs, burned or otherwise, in the car because the stereo is much better than any ipod adaptor I’ve ever tried.

Question - this may have been answered, but I didn’t see it: would it be worth bringing an electric tea kettle?

If it’s something that’s allowed in your dorms and something that you’ll use, I think a cup of tea sounds fantastic with ridiculously long hours of studying  Just make sure it’s not a kettle your cherish…you never know what can happen to valuables in a college dorm!

Thank you no average genius for reminding me to bring my ninja swords. You know you can never be too careful with all those other ninjas lurking around campus

So since I’m like the world’s laziest person when it comes to buying soap and things, I was thinking of buying one of those storage trays for under the bed and getting like 10 shampoos, conditioners (my hair’s so long!), soaps, female products, etc. because I feel like at college I especially won’t want to make the trip to the store. I was wondering if anyone else was planning on doing something similar. I hope this doesn’t sound to weird haha

I was also planning to do this…although i wonder if it will take up too much space. It will be convenient though.

Great list ! Thanks !

It’s nice advice to just wait & buy everything when you get there…but what if you already have a lot of the stuff at home?! It would be quite expensive to just go buy new stuff .

What is a hot pot? Like a crock pot? Our school doesn’t allow george forman grills, but does allow a toaster. (For toast, eggo waffles, pop tarts…)

Where does everyone find shelves & storage that is slim lined and won’t take up a lot of room?

Is there a forum/posting for how to decorate or set up your dorm room? Mabye do’s and don’ts , etc ?

A while ago Wal-Mart had these great storage shelves on sale for $7. They were probably 3 ft. tall and just a foot or so wide, but they could store a lot. I’m usually not a Wal-Mart fan, but I was there with my mom and figured that wasn’t a deal I should pass on. Now I even wish I had gotten more than the one I got- which is the new home for all of my TV-on-DVDs, lol.

10 characters. saved.

OP: Thank you SO MUCH for the list! I’m leaving for a 7-week summer internship in a week, and I’m just starting to get all my things together. This list is not only helpful for college packing, but also similar internships, summer camps, etc. You saved me a lot of time so I could actually study the material for my internship rather than stress out about what stuff to bring. Thanks again.

Things that came in the most handy for me at college this past year:

 1. Vacuum cleaner: my mom had a small-sized vacuum (a real one, not a handheld) that she gave me. It single-handedly made me a ton of friends :stuck_out_tongue: Everyone knew who I was! (No, but seriously, lots of people will want to borrow it, and it really did get me to meet new people. Which was cool.)
 2. Eye mask/ear plugs: FANTASTIC, 100%. Great for when the roommate needed to stay up studying or talking to her boyfriend, or the drunk jerks outside were being noisy on the weekends when I had work the next day. Or for those 2PM naps…
 3. Magic hangers: Tripled the space in my small closet.

how do i post a question. I need help. I was wait listed for housing at UCI (even though i wasnt late but thats another story). Has anyone ever been waited listed for housing at UCI? Do people on the waitlist usually get housing??

I am just a state away to where I am currently enrolled, so I did not brought my entire room with me. It’s just an Amtrak away. Anyway, these are just the things I have in my room; no cooking appliance because I share the same kitchen with the owner of the house:

my old tv

my ipod speaker

headset for laptop

my macbook

my reference books

my clothes

my shoes

my bags

my school documents, and other important papers (birth certificate)

my favorite pillow

my frames

Hi guys, I will be commuting to a local university near my home as a freshmen. I heard from a friend that there will be many books to buy for college. Can anybody make a list of books that I will need for college?

Thanks.

Haters gon’ hate, but I think this list is fantastic. Thanks!

seachai… there is no universal list of books you will need, it depends on what classes you take and even then different universities use different books
