thanks the a-z list was very helpful

I’m going to bring 50% fewer items that what I brought the first time I moved into the dorms.

1 suitcase of clothing.
1 box of personal items.
Laptop
Backpack with additional personal items.

you really don’t need that much stuff. I used this list when I moved in last year and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything…

http://collegechecklist.yolasite.com/checklist.php

Thanks so much for the lists, everybody. They don’t work for everyone, but they’re a great starting point! Don’t forget sunscreen (it’s expensive) and a good bathing suit!

WOW! Thanks! The list is pretty long and must have taken you forever to make!

Oh my gosh. I just found this thread AFTER I finished my list.

Wow, great list, i just posted it into word and deleted what I didn’t need. I need to make sure I have everything because i’m living off campus in an apartment so I can’t just go down the hall and ask a friend. Also, I’m driving there and I can load my car up with as much crap as I want, I feel sorry for those people flying internationally or domestically, plane regulations SUCK and I would just buy all this stuff when you get here.

Say you’re an internat student, how on earth are you meant to fly half your belongings over with a weight limit of like 20kg?!

Some additional things that I have on my list are below.

Wristwatch (a nice one, for guys usually)
Printer
Desk lamp
Study light (for those late nights when you’re trying not to awake a room mate)
Fan (some dorms are quite warm)
Extension cords
2-to-3 electrical prong adapters (may or may not be used)
Gym Bag
Index cards
Labels (assorted sizes)
Flash/thumb drives
Ruler
Glue
Scissors
Dish sponge (if you are planning on washing dishes)
Lightbulbs (at least one)
Knife
Air freshener
Ziploc bags
Mouthwash
Any hair styleing product you use
Kleenex / tissues
First aid kit

I don’t know if this was implied by “tissues” on the list, but I’m bringing a multi-pack of those pocket sized tissue packets. They’re great for blowing your nose on the road, when you need to clean something up and that’s all you have, etc.

Definitely don’t forget medicine- I actually did until just now, lol. There were two thinks I didn’t have with me the first time around that made me miserable: cold medicine and a blanket.

Some things I’ve been reminding myself lately to get:

cold medicine

blanket

storage

mini fridge

I keep forgetting I’ll be in a dorm and not an apartment again, so I’ll need to be a lot more creative with storage.

The list on the first page is helpful but can be overwhelming and overwhelming includes things one buy on a day to day basis: meaning these things can be useful one day and in the garbage the next. Forgeting to purchase such items would not be a big deal.
Overall very helpful but overwhelming.

thanks for posting that. i won’t be able to bring 3/4 of that stuff most likely, but it made me think about a lot of stuff i never would have considered. very helpful!

Thank you - just what I was looking for. I have a daughter who is very organized and likes to plan ahead. She will love this.

A note from experience, buy the dorm insurance. I did and it was well worth it.

Last year I bought my son one of those hand held steamers for his dress clothes - he loves it!

Thanks, that is amazing and informative

From the list at the top of the page, a few comments:

-Fan/Space Heater Combo - Many, if not most, schools don’t allow you to bring space heaters (they’re a fire hazard). Your room should have a heater anyway.

-One Binder per Class - That’s a lot of binders, taking up a lot of space! For many classes, a folder or spiral notebook will suffice.

-Washcloth (at least two) - Either you want to be doing laundry really often or enjoy using dirty washcloths.

-Three-Four pairs of jeans - I’d advise more if you wear jeans every day…even if you wear them for a few days per pair, that’s still more laundry you have to do…

-Surge protector - or three or four, my room had 6 outlets last year…

Hey everyone,

Any thoughts on bringing a high school diploma to college? I would like to hang my own up in my dorm.

guys, that’s all fine and good, but i think you should really not rush ahead. there are plenty of things you should DO before you even start getting your bags ready xD

i am curious what you think, i had a blast, but it has really good advices. [Hints for freshers before leaving for Uni | Milestone Consulting - Your partner in education](http://■■■■■■/aynFej)
