A Victory for Spell-Check--Johns Hopkins Drops an "S"

From the JHU Web site today:

quote The Johns Hopkins University announced today that it is bowing to the inevitable and officially changing its name to "John Hopkins."

"We give up," university President Ronald J. Daniel said. "We're fighting a losing battle here. And we strongly suspect the extra 's' was a typo in the first place" ...

See The Johns Hopkins University - We've changed our name to John Hopkins

So, if you're tired of your spell-check correcting you each time you've typed "Johns," you won't have that problem anymore.

Funny, though, that this announcement came on April 1. ;)

i hope thats not true. i always felt that the extra “s” made it special, any any time you visit for an info session or a tour, they always made such a big deal on the correct spelling.

APRIL FOOLS lol. it’s not real. ( i heard from a current jhu student.

Now see, this is a GOOD kind of April Fool’s post for CC. It’s not going to set someoen’s hopes up, only to be cruelly dashed. Good job.

I agree. I hate to see April Fools’ jokes like “Brown to accept all Waitlisted Applicants” or “Harvard concedes sending out 900 rejection letters to admitted students.”

This one just makes us smile but shouldn’t affect anyone’s blood pressure (except perhaps those who are related to the original JohnS Hopkins) ;)

p.s. If you liked JHU’s April Fools prank, check out some of these at other colleges, etc.: [Student Newspapers Play the Fools, and Readers Play Along - Students - The Chronicle of Higher Education](http://chronicle.com/article/Student-Newspapers-Play-the/64941/?sid=pm&utm_source=pm&utm_medium=en)

Do you know that Johns Hopkins was named for its founder…Johns Hopkins? The “Johns” was, I believe, his grandmother’s maiden name…
