A vs A-

I had a question about grading scales and how they affect transfer admissions. I noticed that many transfer applicants come from schools that are on the ABC grading scale, whereas students like myself are on the A, A-, B+, B grading scale. That said, I've received several A-s and for that reason, I have a GPA hovering around 3.85 (As and A-s). How will this affect me when I'm competing against students with 4.0s at schools that are on the ABC grading scale?

I’m not quite sure about this. I’m hoping the school will convert the GPA back into it’s own GPA system and then compare

Both schools I’m applying to are on the same grading scale as my current institution (A, A-, etc.). However, how can they convert a student’s GPA to a GPA on their own system if their transcript simply lists A, B, C, etc? They cannot determine if the student received a 90% or a 99%.

I assume they use the GPA listed on your transcript/mid term report.

I think your school’s history of giving out high/low GPAs is a factor on how they view your GPA.

Actually I don’t know many schools have the sheer ABC system, but I think if there really are applicants from these kind of schools they’ll balance it… the reason I’m hoping they convert it is my school has a weird system of giving A+ but only regard A+ as 4.0… While I got quite a lot of A+s…

Most, if not all CCs are on the ABC system, as well as many universities. Most top universities, such as Vandy and Northwestern (schools I’m applying to) are on the A, A- system. I feel like it’s a way to deflate grades since maintaining a 92.5%+ can be difficult, especially when taking a rigorous course load.

OHHH I didn’t know much about CCs. But I think we should have faith in the school we are attending. Even though I’m leaving, I believe that people know it is better and harder than CCs.

^I’d hope so. Although my university isn’t particularly special (tier 1, top 150 usnews), I’d like to think the courses offered here are more challenging than classes at a CC. I say that because my brother goes to a CC and I’ve seen his workload.

I have the same problem. ****es me off, I have one A- and one A+… Which doesn’t even out. I’m hoping the UC/CSU system ignores it.

^I’ll just pray every single day that they will count A+ as 4.3… God knows how much I wish that from happening.

If I were on the ABC system, I’d have a 3.9. However, I have a 3.81 on the A, A- system. Not fair if you ask me…
