A Weird Question for Current Students

So my parents haven't bought my Christmas presents yet, and I was thinking that I should ask for something that I will need at Penn. I will be living in the dorms. What are some things I will need that are not obvious (obvious things include a computer, warm coat, boots, etc.)? Thanks in advance.

Bed risers are always helpful…unless you get a bed that’s already risen. I’ve seen that many girls have successful used shoe racks in their closets. An extra lamp would come in VERY handy, as the one that was provided in my room isn’t exactly bright enough to light the entire room. You can also think of possible decorations for your room: Posters, white boards, cork boards, etc. I’ve also utilized a coat hanger that hangs on the back of my door very well.

If you like to make your own food, a crock-pot or panini-maker are good tools for procrastination.

With regards to actual functionality, I’d say maybe a hand-vacuum or something, maybe portable speakers.

get a sound system
+1 to hand-held vacuum

a 55" samsung led, 7.1 surround sound, blu ray player…the usual necessities ya know?

^^^^
Ahhh yes. Boy magnets.

Thanks for all of the answers. Would a microwave be practical? Is there room for one? Even small ones take a lot of room.

Oh yes very practical. They rent them along with mini-fridges here too.

I’d suggest purchasing your own microwave and refrigerator… the rentals are $211.99 for one year… compare that to purchasing a mini-fridge for $113.00 and a microwave for $53.00 (roughly comparable quality)… that is $166.00 total and you OWN it. Storage for summers (if you need it) costs no more than fifty bucks, and if you move off campus, you take your stuff with you.

All that said, I’d recommend getting a mini-fridge and/or a microwave… Twin XL bedding also. Most of the other stuff, though, is tough to decide on before you get your housing assignment. If you live in Hill, definitely get a standing fan, extra flip flops for the showers, hooks to hang clothing on, etc. If you live in the high rises, kitchen ware is a good idea. If you’re in the Quad it might be nice to have a little throw rug.

Thanks, Chrisw. That’s very helpful.

Like Chrisw said, it all depends on where you will live. The high-rises come with a large fridge (and an oven and stove, but no microwave).
