<p>I recently received info in the mail about a fridge/freezer/microwave oven combo endorsed by Rice. Apparently, it fits perfectly into a dorm room and requires only one plug. </p>
<p>Has anyone bought this appliance? Is it as amazing as it seems? Is it appropriate for all residential colleges or is a fridge/microwave not a necessity for some colleges (i.e. if they have a kitchen on the floor).</p>
<p>Also, do people usually bring TVs or gaming systems? </p>

<p>Yeah, don’t get that. You can sometimes pick up appliances that the upperclassmen have left behind for cheap. If not, you still have the option of buying a new fridge and microwave. But don’t get the combo; it’s terrible.</p>
<p>Don’t get your sheets through the Rice-endorsed seller, either.</p>
<p>EDIT: Rice tries to get you to buy (rent) that fridge combo by making it the only way you’re allowed to have a microwave in your room. But everyone has one anyway.</p>
<p>So you don’t have to buy that one in order to have a microwave? Phew heheh…

<p>wait. Lots of places near Rice to buy cheap fridges and microwaves. Agreed - don’t buy sheets package. I’ve heard they are awful. Target is good for cheap sheets…</p>
<p>I had trouble finding twin XL sheets at Target, but maybe that’s just me. Also, good news on the appliances.</p>

<p>T.J. Maxx and Marshall’s sell discounted XL twin sheets. You don’t really need to buy an XL comforter/blanket, the regular twin size works – but you do need to get XL sheets. Mattress toppers can be nice.</p>
<p>Regular twin sheets fit the beds, too. They’re snug, but I actually preferred having tight sheets.</p>
<p>I would highly encourage waiting to buy your microwave/fridge until you get here. Not only can you coordinate with a future roommate if you wait, but you can likely pick up a much cheaper alternative at Target or used from your college (depending on supply). The Rice combo, while nice, is a total ripoff.</p>
<p>Edit: The Rice sheets are AWFUL.</p>

<p>Those of you looking for XL sheets now are a little early. Come July everyone will sell the XL size. I agree on getting the mattress topper. And get that this summer too. They are really tough to find after the off-to-college sales are done.</p>
<p>Good point about being early, BrooklyninOh. Isn’t it incredible that we’re talking about sheets even before residential college assignments are out?</p>
<p>But not nearly as incredible as trying to imagine someone stretching a regular twin sheet to reach the corners of an XL twin mattress. That’s what Owls do – they make the seemingly impossible possible!</p>
<p>Target usually has the XL sheets made out of t-shirt stretchy stuff for less than 20$ a set… My kids both liked those sheets.</p>
<p>Found XL 500 thread count twin sheets at Macys. They didn’t carry them at my local store in that size but the sales person just ordered them off the computer and shipped them to my house for free shipping. They are wonderful! They come in all kinds of great colors. Arrived in 4 days.</p>
<p>No one really cares if you have a microwave (as long as you dont set off the fire alarm). Many colleges have “furniture auctions” where they sell stuff left behind by upperclassmen. It is a good way to get stuff on the cheap</p>
<p>I got my S a Britta Pitcher (filters water) from Target last year. Both him and his roommate love it. No expense of bottled water and waste of plastic bottles, no hauling in as much soda and bottled drinks as before…and drinking less sugared drinks is awesome.</p>
<p>^^ Most colleges also have Culligan RO (Reverse Osmosis) machines in the commons. You can fill up a large container (either a Brita or just a pitcher) and stick it in the fridge.</p>
<p>Lots of XL sheet sets are now available at T.J. Maxx – and likely, other stores are stocking them too…</p>
