A year at CC?

I am considering transfer option for my son (rising Junior) who has Aspergers. I feel like he is about 2-3 years behind in maturity compared to his age. I wonder if a year in community college would be good for him as he would gain more maturity and catch up so to speak. He does very well in school except in English since reading comprehension is a weakness for him. He is very good in other areas especially Math and Science. His current GPA is about 3.8. He is also someone who will bomb at SAT/ACT. He just doesn’t do well in high stakes testing. Goal is for him to major in Engineering. Some might say how do you know he will succeed in Engineering. I know because I was like him in my teen years. I am an Engineer and he is way smarter than I was at his age.

Do students typically finish a whole academic year in community colleges or other schools before transferring? Do you apply in late Fall like high school students do? Do colleges still require ACT/SAT even with a year of CC courses? Thanks.

Stem majors usually stay for two years before transferring. Often 3, sometimes 4, depending where they place into. Yes applications take place late fall, and depending on school, can go to winter. As for standarized tests, it depends on the school. Some schools require ACT/SAT for transfers, others don’t. You need to look at the school policies. Often, if a transfer is under a certain amount of units, their highschool performance will be taken into account.
