A1 audition conference. Daughter auditioning in NYC this weekend. Paid a hefty fee but thought that at least she’d get a private coaching as promised. But the coaching slots are all full and there are only like 15-20 slots. Really bummed. And annoyed.
My D is auditioning this weekend as well at the A1s. There are supposed to be free workshops for college students (like taxes for actors etc) but my D has not received any info about those. Does anyone know if they sent an email out about the free workshops? Thanks and break legs everyone!
Wait, are you saying that you paid a hefty extra fee for private coaching but now they won’t let your daughter have the session because there aren’t any slots? So they booked and accepted payment for more slots than were available?
Hang in there! My d went to A1’s last year and did get a private coaching and it was mostly just a chance to run her material once or twice. It was very quick. They were encouraging but it wasn’t a game changer by any means so I wouldn’t worry that others gained much of an advantage. As long as your d is comfortable with her material, I wouldn’t think twice about it. My d was there as a freshman and the audition truly was a great learning experience. She had 3 callbacks and of course the times conflicted and they were at different places so she had to try and juggle that - running around on the subway, etc. She was there with a group of friends and just figuring out how it all works was worth it for her. Hoping all goes great for your d and please report back what she thought of it. Mine is in rehearsal for her school show right now so couldn’t go this year but otherwise, she definitely would have returned.
Thanks! Did your daughter get any summer work last year? My daughter is a freshman. Good luck to her on her show!
@fancytheatrekid Thanks! And yes, she did get a great summer stock job that she loved but it came from an open call for that particular theatre instead of A1’s. She also hit NETC’s and enjoyed that as well so if your D doesn’t book something this weekend, I’d encourage her to look at the open calls for theatres around her and keep trying. Break a leg!
It would be nice if A-1s was the model for all other unified type auditions, in that you don’t have to pay unless you get an audition slot.
@ourturn2 , @fancytheatrekid , @DefyingGravity2 if any of you happen to see this, where did your kids stay last year and was it convenient to the conference? Looking now for rooms for my daughter who just came off of the waitlist.
@CMB625 I sent you a private message.
@CMB625, I would also love to get this information!
Does anyone know for sure where A1s will be this year? Year before last it was at Pearl and last year it was at Gibney dance I think. I haven’t seen the location announced yet. Thanks!
Thanks for this reply! My daughter is gearing up for summer stock this year and this helps to clarify a piece of the process!
To answer my own question, this year it’s at the Kimmel Center and they have a group rate at a hotel about a 10-15 minute walk away.
And apparently this year it’s also at Playwrights Horizons Downtown as well. Have 2 daughters and one goes Saturday at Playwrights while the other is scheduled for Sunday at the Kimmel Center. Both locations are convenient to the same hotel. Just didn’t want to confuse anyone!
