In need of suggestions on what schools to apply to within my range. Looking for a school with a strong pre-med and Financial aid. Preferably in a city or nice town that has lots of stuff to do, I like walking around (no rural for me). Thanks!

Physician here. Most colleges/universites will be fine for medical school plans. Your instate public with a medical school will obviously have the courses and opportunities helpful in your present goals. Medical schools do rank colleges, awarding points to better ones when evaluating potential students- you may want to take this into consideration when evaluating the costs of schools. It does not take genius level academic ability to become a good physician. It does take a certain ability and hard work to get the good grades required to get into and succeed in medical school, regardless of minority status. You need to realize that wherever you attend college you will need to spend most of your time with the academics, especially with average precollege stats for many flagship level colleges. Choose the school that is a good fit for your academic and social needs, many premed students change their minds about becoming physicians. Have viable alternate plans and choose schools that would meet those best.

The short answer- most colleges/majors work for a premed student. You are most likely to do best at the best fit school. Look for the best undergrad fit for you and medical school chances will be the best possible for you.

But, the OP needs some suggestions of schools that can really meet his financial needs (w/o a bunch of student loans - he’ll likely have enough of those for med school )

So, I recommended that he post here in the Parents Forum, because I know that some of the super moms (and some super dads) on this forum (sybbie, swimcats, thumper, etc - you guys know who you are) know which schools and LACs will want this student and will help him with his costs.

his ranking is super, his stats are good, so where should he apply???

(he hasn’t said to what degree he’ll need aid, but for now, assume he has an EFC of 0 )

AA physician here!..No recommendations based on the info you’ve shared so far, but lots of well wishes! For what it’s worth, 100 years ago, I had similar stats at my public high school in New York, and got an Air Force scholarship for undergrad, then borrowed, rather than owe more time, for medical school. DC is great for walking around…if you know where…

I am looking to stay on the East Coast. Size is not a major factor, I am mainly looking into the medium and larger schools as they tend to be in major cities/urban areas.

Also, I am applying to TCNJ as it is an excellent public school but feel it is out of my range. I am trying to find schools that will be more in my range, and not so much of a reach :-/

Would you consider an HBCU? Howard is in DC, and Morehouse in Atlanta. Great cities, relatively low tuition, decent med school admission rates, and Howard’s school of Medicine or Meharry are near .

Your stats are very similar to my daughter who is also interested in medicine. She likes SUNY Gen. & Bing- even for OOS it is a good deal. There is also SUNY Buffalo (far from Jersey, but a good school/value), SUNY Stonybrook- closer to you. Those are the SUNY’s we like. My daughter is also looking a few privates. A lot of smaller Catholic colleges seem to have nice endowments for merit scholarships. Good luck:)

Which schools (possibly LACs) would likely be able to meet the OP’s FA needs without a bunch of loans?

Surely some schools that are tilted a bit heavily female (like 60%) want more males to help raise their male numbers. It would also seem that some of these schools also want to improve their diversity numbers.

LACs are allowed to give preference to gender (in this case male) to help their balance of numbers. So, which ones are these?

Vassar…(not exactly urban!) is definitely one of these, and I know several women who got BA’s there and went on to great med schools. It seems like every LAC needs more men…and even HYP have more qualified female applicants than men.

For TCNJ, your SAT scores are within the middle 50% (on the high end for CR and the low end for Math), your rank is good. I would consider it to be a match rather than a reach for you, especially considering that you are a URM.

However, if you want to apply to the Biology major, I’ve heard that it is more competitive and the applications are due earlier, so keep that in mind and apply early.

Yeah I am defintely applying to TCNJ very soon. Instead of putting Biology has my major I was considering Psychology instead since their Biology major is more selective. Thank you so much everyone for your input! Keep the suggestions comin’ lol
