Interesting that you did very well on verbal (and all other sections) but poorly on the reading. That’s an odd profile. Do you feel that a mistake may have been made? You could request that your test be rescored.

SSAT scores are just a piece of the pie that the schools use in the decision process. Your overall score is excellent, I seriously wouldn’t sweat it. Most teachers like to teach, what fun would it be with a class full of little Einstein’s?

I agree with what ops said (above) and would also note that you are not the first CC’er to do more poorly on the reading section of the SSAT than on other sections. For some reason, many otherwise highly capable students seem to find that section challenging. So, I agree, your score on that section was far from stellar, but you’re not alone in finding it difficult, so don’t worry about it too much.

Yeah i thought it was weird cuz i always did so well
In reading on practices and poorly on verbal (compared to other sections)
so i expected lower score on verbal than reading
but shocked to see the result…
;/

so that one section… does not really play THAT MUCH role in the process, i hope?

Don’t worry about it too much. My guess is they will pay close attention to both your written essays and your English teacher rec.

I got the exact same score, except it was in math. At this point, the best you can do is think positively! Remember that you have essays and recommendations to back you up.

@inosheir,
To be honest, the reading and math scores are the two most important scores. An Admission officer at SPS told me that the biggest indicator of success at their school was the SSAT reading school. I don’t think they’d not consider you because of your reading score, (and if your essay’s good, they might begin to forgive it) but it definitely will have a negative effect on your application. That’s not to say that you have no hope at all. You very well might get acceptances on March 10th! Good luck.

I received 39th percentiles on my first SSAT on RC and 90th percentiles on my second. I didn’t do any practice whatsoever in between. It just really depends on what passages you get.

e.g. On my first SSAT, there were one poem and then ANOTHER medley of poems. So I panicked. Ran out of time. Guessed. Failed. On my second SSAT, all the passages were prose. One of the essay topics were North American Natives and I was studying those topics so I had the idea of it before I read the passage, which made it a lot easier. I even went to the washroom during the section and came back and finished it and I still had 10 minutes to spare. -.-||

I am confidant about my recs (cuz my teachers told me what they wrote about me)
and the essays which i had alot of stuff to write about cuz
volunteering works which i rly rly love and spend alot of time
which rly flowed well with some topics

BUT
im one of the skools im applying for is TAFT which is my top choice
and i heard they rly look at ur SSAT scores
So im rly rly worried about the reading sectionnn…

Sorry for the typos
Iphones do not always have d best keyboards. ;/

I wouldn’t sweat it much. The standardized testing is only one part of process as ops mentioned. I got 37 on Mathematics Achievement for the ISEE but did really well on all the other sections. If it appeared that you didn’t do too well on reading, the admissions committee will review the rec’s your English teacher gave you. Testing accounts for a very small part of the whole application. The schools want diversity NOT brainiacs or Einsteins. Your overall SSAT score is great! Good luck!

Is it the only time you have taken it? I was told by several schools that they take your best score - and will kind of mix and match if necessary. Good Reading on one and bad math, and visa versa on another and they will look at both and the highest reading and the highest math.

@inosheir,
Taft’s average SSAT score is 82%, which is fairly low considering that it has a 23% acceptance rate. A kid from my school got into Taft with a 75% SSAT, they don’t look at the SSAT that much. But, that’s not to say they will be satisfied with your reading score. Hopefully, they will overlook it.

I remember when I was applying to boarding schools (: Then I figured out my local public school was beast and decided to stay.
