Do caets generally have a preference of one over the other?

Can't really speak to preferences, but I have AFB and I have been very happy with it. The Bank on campus is easily accessed and the online services are golden.

Same here.

i use the credit union, and i love it. there isn't a bank itself, but the atm is still very accesible, and the online is great.

not to bash the bank, but both my first semester roommates had problems with opening accounts with the bank, and they were not very willing to work with them. but that could've just been one person

I was wondering how all the financial stuff works. Am I supposed to cancel all of my credit/debit cards before I go since I really won't be putting anything into them? Or will I? It's all just really confusing. Or do I cancel the credit/debit and keep the savings?

You can keep anything you had before, and use it if you wish. The AFB/AAFCU facilities and cards are just easier by way of proximity really. Also, you will specify to the Academy where your pay goes, and the two big ones are easiest.

Which bank seems easier to access when you are home?

Neither lol. My hometown of Houston has neither in it. In general though, I believe AFB has more branches by far than AAFCU for more obvious reasons.

So your pay goes directly into your own bank account? And the C-store will take whichever plastic you give them?

yes and yes.

By the way, where in Anaheim hills are you? Years ago I lived there and went to Nohl Canyon elementary (sister went to Canyon HS). All I remember is an albertson's at an intersection where the hill led up to my house.

What a small world! I go to Canyon HS and I live right next to it. I used to play tennis near Nohl Canyon elementary all the time. When did you live here? And when did your sister graduate?

I lived there during my pre-K to 2nd grade years. So that's 1991 to 1995. Depressing moving back to TX, I loved So Cal. My sister graduated Canyon HS in 1994, she was on the dance team I remember. Yes, she is much older than I.

That's really cool. yeah, there aren't too many people who live in here in the hills and leave. I love it here. Why did your family leave? I am definitely facebooking you. Once a hiller, always a hiller!

just wondering, does anybody here use USAA? and can we still use that once we arrive or do we have to go with either AFB or AAFCU? this is still confusing to me. thanks

I use USAA for my credit card account. You can use it, just get the paperwork so that USAFA can put your pay in to your account.

Yes, you can stay with USAA. Just bring along a checking account deposit slip with you to I-Day. You can use your card in any of the ATM's at school and they give you your fees back (up to a certain amount, I believe). We established an account for our son, so he has an older acct. # with them for whenever he wants to secure a loan, etc. It is where we/he have all of our insurance (car, house, renter).

When we were active duty, we didn't have to keep switching credit unions, etc. We were able to keep one account.

I also have also established a USAA acount just recently and from the few times of contact they have been very prompt and efficient with customer service. Letting me establish my own account even thought Im not 18 yet.
