I have been admitted to AAP's Freshman Summer Program.
I want to get some thoughts from people who took this program before. Well, I called them today, then I realized the program will require me to take Math or (and?) English placement test regardless of your AP Cal score. The actual courses in summer will be 12 units (3 courses). These courses are not the actual course, for example, you will not take chemistry course but a prepared course for chemistry.

My questions:
1. what are the contents about the math placement test?
2. what if I don't take AAP's freshman summer program, do I jump to the actual chemistry course in fall?
3. the courses that I am taking from AAP's Freshman Summer Program will be on my future UCLA transcript? Since they are prepare-typed courses, I take it will not help if I want to get into any minors or speed up my future minor or major?

Not sure about #1. I’ll leave that for someone who knows the answer. If I had to guess, it would cover up to (and possibly including?) calculus.

I believe you’d start with Chem 20A or 14A, depending on your major. (20-30 series for physical science / engineering majors, 14 series for life science majors, although they can take the 20-30 series).

Yes, I would think the courses would show up on your transcript (someone correct me if I’m wrong).
As for it helping for minors, etc.: it really depends on your major and what you place into. For example, English Comp 3 will take care of the Entry Level Writing Requirement and the Writing I requirement, if you haven’t already satisfied those with AP/IB/SAT scores. Most of the others shouldn’t do much for you though, although if you need review before diving into the beginning courses for freshmen, they can’t hurt.

I called the office of AAP’s Freshman Summer Program today. They told me that everyone needs to get MATH placement test before move-in date so they will place the science courses. And, I was told it is most likely a course to prepare for chemistry.

So, I became to wonder if I should take Summer Institute instead.

If you have a strong background in chemistry (for example, you took AP Chem and did well), then I would say you should be okay taking Chem 20A with CSI. However, if you have not, I would look into doing the chem with FSP, since it’ll give you a review. Keep in mind that these classes are 6 weeks long, whereas regular classes are 10 weeks, so it will be very fast-paced and difficult to keep up if you don’t have a strong Chemistry background.

Hey there. I took the FSP summer program this past summer so I think I can be of some help. When I took it we had to take two classes and it totaled to 10 units.

The math placement test will cover stuff like geometry and algebra. I don’t remember it covering calculus, it had alot of geometry and some probability.

yes you can jump straight into chem during fall. the program is only to reinforce your understanding of the beginning material covered in college calculus and chem

yes these courses will appear on your transcript and they will count for units as well as gpa points.

if you take english comp 3 then yeah it will help, some other classes will help with GE’s and such but the science program does not satisfy anything

thanks for the info.
what are the courses you took in FSP summer?

the FSP office told me they will assign courses for me according to my placement test results. is that so?

freshmen should (or are suggested) to take courses from Freshman Cluster?
[UCLA Freshman Clusters](http://www.college.ucla.edu/ge/clusters/)

FSP or Summer Institute?

sorry for replying so late, dont get on here much

I took the science intensive program when i was in FSP
so basically the chem/calc class and i also took english comp 3

i recommend taking english comp 3 because the class is relatively small (there were about 18 people in my class) and you have an opportunity to build a relationship with the professor. I am actually getting a letter of rec from mine

and yeah they will place you into classes depending on your placement tests. if you dont pass the placement test for science they will put you in a lower science intensive course if i remember correctly

Is the placement test for science intensive program only Math?

yes the placement test is only math
