Our SATII Math 2C saga: my son is a soph in Honors Pre-Calc. He struggled through 9th grade Honors math and his teacher did not recommend he continue in the Honor track but he wanted to prove them all wrong and he insisted on taking honors pre-calc because he knew he could "do it." BIG mistake. I guess he could have done better if he had the inner drive to at least try and master the difficult material but he didn't and he did very poorly this year. I signed him up for the 2C thinking that if he did well it would show a mastery of the material and that his poor grades were a result of other factors (i.e. his laziness and lack of motivation).

Well, bottom line is that we have to re-group on the whole math subject. He will be re-taking the entire year of pre-calc next year at a regular level, not honors, and so I decided that he should not take the SAT II. Too much stress. He took a practice test and scored a 630. I thought: why are we doing this? Don't take the test, re-take the class at a level and pace better suited to him which should be reflected in better grades and take the SAT II next June when, please dear god, he's in a lot better shape academically.

Sometimes, it's just not worth it. My son is young for his grade, he was in over his head this year, and he needs the extra year of maturing and learning the material. Two steps forward, one step back with teenagers.

fireflyscout: Steve McQueen got me through the most stressful, grief-filled time of my life. Though never a particular fan of his, for some reason I rented everything he ever appeared in and sat up watching all night for a couple of weeks. I'm sure he served your D as well!

fredo, I will be very happy if my younger S brings home a 630 from today's Math IIC. I'd be even happier if it were higher, but please please let it be something like 630....

Son took USHistory and Bio today. It went "fine."

Mine actually did finally open the prep book for history Thursday eve and studied for a couple of hours, and took a practice test yesterday. Yea!
Even so, he said the history was tougher than the bio. You would think that after APUSH, it would be easy, but I guess the information is different - less conceptual and more fact-based on the SAT than the AP, according to him. It will be interesting - he hoped to be able to use the history (so he doesn't seem like a complete dufus in humanities) , since the other two he took last year were math and chem. Good luck to all!

Well, I can top all of your stories. Daughter was signed up for the SAT II's this morning. Told me last night at 10 pm that she'd decided not to take them after all. Just isn't going to apply to any schools that require them. Period. Then she went back to playing Sims. :)

D made it in time, and says she was able to quell the tachycardia . How difficult could it have been to send an e-mail to the students who registered on-line? Sheesh.

We then hammered down the NAFTA Highway to South Austin fighting the traffic from The Republic of Texas biker rally, a large female softball tourney, and rumor has it,a gay pride march. Sixth Street will be wild tonight. Cover your heads with your pillows, and stay in bed. We drove home.

We made the game at half-time. The SAT was "late" as they had to wait on the people who went to location uno. We were up by 5 without her. We won by 27. It was good day afterall. Opposing coach called D "Halftime", told her after the game that she COULD have just stayed home. LOL.

Oh, the test. Yeah-she just said "eh".That's all I have so far.

My D, the one who studied for 10 minutes in the car, said that the SATIIs
were hard. Imagine that. She already wants to retake the SATs in October, so I'm hoping that todays results will be OK despite the less than glowing prognosis. I hope I can hold it together till next spring. I'm already feeling pretty shakey.

Firefly, no not the college version, just the regular Sims advanced.

She did inform me yesterday that she is happy to report that she now has six children and five grandchildren in the Sims universe. Then she added "but it's really annoying because you can't get rid of Sims kids when they're grown up. They just keep walking into your house and causing problems."

I could not make this stuff up if I tried. :)

Best wishes to everyone else's kids who did take the SAT or SAT II today: I'll keep my fingers crossed for them!

'mudge, I read too fast...thought at first that your D spelled "tachycardia." I hope that while going into South Austin you at least grabbed a dish of Amy's ice cream about a mile after you crossed the bridge on the left.

I, innocently asked if the 2C was harder than the AP BC Calc test? How did it compared? He must have laughed for several minutes before he could catch his breath and informed me the 2C is not the same material has the AP BC Calc. Like how would I know??

I am not in his geeky, nerdy, math-weirdo class??? Like I am gonna know??? He is still laughing at me, hours later.

Needless to say I did not ask if the Chem was like his AP Chem test. He did say he finished both with time left over to double check answers. And he did say the AP tests have free responses(?) and SAT II's don't. I did not even ask.

He says it depends on what APs he has in the fall (he's on 4x4 block) to determine what other SAT II he will take. He says he should have taken the US History one last year after he completed AP US instead of the SAT I. I am sure he'll figure it out.

He came home from the test, went running for MILES and then lifted for HOURS. Did I mention how nuts he makes me....I swear I am going to end every post for the next year about him, saying he makes me BONKERS!!!

Kat,
Don't you just love when your son laughs at your utter cluelessness? This is one of the joys of mothering my son. I seem to be a perpetual source of humor for him. :)

My older S hae a tendency to roll his eyes and sigh, "Whatever." That all-purpose "I don't have the energy to argue with the likes of you" teen catch-phrase. (Please don't tell me only California kids say this...) He says it with a certain amount of love, but he says it regularly.

Which is why one of the gifts I gave him for HS graduation was this little item which I whipped up from SubversiveCrossStitch.com. :) He plans to hang it in his dorm room. (WARNING: DO NOT poke around that website if you are easily insulted or offended. The other kits have some non-G-rated sentiments and are not for all sensibilities.)

Oh Mootmom, those are BAD, but funny, some are just bad - I wish I could X-stitch well enouh to adapt designs - we are always telling the kids "People are sheep!", but "people are cattle" just isn't right.
