umm...Abercrombie and American Eagle is definitely preppy.

Hmmm...I've been in Abercrombie once and only b/c a friend dragged me in there. I'm sorry, but if I don't see sale signs EVER in a store, I will NEVER go in there. That's my policy and I'm sticking to it like I stick to my bug policy. If the bug's inside, I can kill it; if it's outside, leave it alone.

GDF: Abercrombie and American Eagle are for tacky public school kids who desperately aspire to preppiness. Everything originating from those stores is cheap and a pathetic imitation of clothes that are actually nice. Nobody who is actually preppy would be caught dead near an abercrombie or AE, nor would they refer to themselves as preppy. If you go to private school and still think abercrombie and AE are preppy, you probably go to a crappy private school. Sorry, saw the title of this thread on latest posts and had to jump in.

i go to a non-crappy private school and like everyone wears abercrombie/american eagle/hollister/aero

I assure you, it's probably crappy in the grand scheme of things.

Well, I go to a crappy (yay! for school spirit) private school and everytime i turn around, someone at school is wearing one of those stupid rope bracelets from aeo. But then again, we also have people who wear really nice Ralph Lauren clothes.

no its really not a crappy private school i swear we were like in US News best school or something and we have like.. i dunno 3 people in the senior class going to MIT. and all the local rich people, politicans send their kids there. rich people choose to spend their money at these stores. im not saying its cuz theyre amazing stores just cuz its the trend.

OK well then your school is just really tacky and nouveau or the "rich people" at your school aren't that rich. Also, 3 people to MIT doesn't really blow me away either. Nobody respectable would touch those three stores.

ya ur wrong. stop dissing my school please u snob./ why am i even arguing with u about the level of wealth of my school. im fricken poor. i dont care about u or ur stuck up opinions. if u dont like the stores leave the rude comments pertaining to the stores not the people who shop there .

haha, i was looking at this thread and i had to make a comment (even though i usually just like to read them). i don't consider abercrombie/ae/hollister to be preppy at ALL. the term "preppy" comes from "prepatory" for prep schools (i.e. andover, exeter, other elite private schools). i would consider true "preppy" to be brands like j.crew (where they have an "andover peacoat"), lacoste, ralph lauren, etc.

don't get me wrong, i still shop at american eagle (not abercrombie/hollister so much). but i mostly consider it to be trendy, and not so much "preppy."

just my opinion.

personally, i like places like banana republic and express men better, but either way, i cant afford them

I would associate AF/AE/HO to be the mark of a snob, not a prep.

I've never been to any of the three.

I have not either but any of those who wear it in school fit the definition of snob and elite.

The snobbish do love wearing it in my school.

I wonder how out of place they look (or if they even know how out of place they look) when there is a band playing music by Dem Franchise Boyz and a large Hispanic population.

do not forget the GAP.

Well, there are few snobbish and elitist people in my school, so when they do wear the clothes they're not very noticeable. Thinking about it, I haven't seen many people wear clothes by these brands anymore in my school.

Allright.....

True prep clothing is Polo Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, J Crew, Sperry Topsiders etc. At a prep school like Andover or Exeter, you will see plenty of kids who only wear these brands, and would never consider wearing AE or Abercrombie.

Abercrombie and AE try to take some of the classic prep style, and modernize it; they try and make it "cool" for teenagers to wear. It's not authentic prep clothing, and sometimes their customers look like they're trying to hard to be "prep".

AE has especially been trying to incorporate some prep styles in their summer line:

Here are two very classic items from J. Crew:
http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod74096591&catId=cat102049
http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/product.jhtml?id=prod63971591&catId=cat102049

Now check out AE's equivalents:
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?rcid=mens&scid=cat90010&sscid=&navroot=mens&productId=0134_4858
http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?rcid=mens&scid=cat90010&sscid=&navroot=mens&productId=0134_4843

So, in general, I can tell you that AE doesn't fit the true prep mold, but that it provides some nice options for affordable clothes.

I used to shop at those stores but I'm just so tired to see everyone wearing the same shirt and has the same style at school so I stoped to do so. I seriously suggest whomever has money to buy abercrombie to try other brands. I don't think abercrombie changes their design that much and their clothes make me feel cheap. The price is sky high but the quality is just as low as it possibly could be. btw thier models & ads are really stupid too. THEY DON'T WEAR CLOTHES!!!!!!
