(Abnormally) small section sizes?

Okay, so I am an incoming freshman and I am enrolled in EARTH 171 and HISTORY 101.

I can't access Wolverine Access at this time because it's offline (it's very late, I've been way too much of a night owl lately...), so I can't get the exact statistics, but when I checked earlier today I noticed something.

I went to my class schedule and went to my class details, and saw that while the lecture sizes for these two classes were fairly substantial (between 50 and 70 for both), the discussion section I enrolled in for HISTORY 101 had only 6 students, including myself, and the lab section I'm in for EARTH 171 has only 8.

I know these might not be the most popular classes like MATH 115 or CHEM 130 (calc I and gen. chem) but I have a feeling these numbers may be abnormally small for a school so large. Is it as strange as I think it might be? Will this small size make the classes more engaging and easier to learn/participate in, or will it just make it awkward?

“Will this small size make the classes more engaging and easier to learn/participate in, or will it just make it awkward?”

Option A.

A class of 8 is not awkward unless you make it that way It’s incredibly fun and you’re lucky you’ll get so much personal attention from the GSI. The only downside would be you have to know you’re stuff because you can’t hide in the crowd but if you keep up with the readings they will be good classes.

I had a class of 9 once (smallest class I’ve ever had - no discussion just lecture) and it wasn’t a problem. But there were a couple of people who just sat in the class and weren’t enrolled in it. Since it was a lecture there wasn’t much student participation in the class though.

Why are you worrying about this?
