I am an international applicant and I come from a background of labourers (my granddad and his father and so on) and belong to a middle class family in Pakistan. Life has been blessing as my dad got a good enough job that got through a quality education in the country. Education is all my parents have been able to provide me and my siblings and we have been lucky enough to be blessed with a good enough grading and extra curricular opportunities. I am interested in applying to US colleges.

Should I mention my family back ground in my application in the "Additional Information" part in the Writing section of the Common App (this is just a summary)? That's because I wrote my personal essay on another topic.

mayb im a bit late… but yessss u should mention everything…
all u have been through makes u diverse…
also…if ur looking for huge financial aid…check out union college…colby…elezabethtown…elon college…
most give full aid and r sat optional…good luck

I would say the personal essay is the best place to bring this out, but you have chosen another course. It is kind of hard to do this in the additional info section. I mean, a lot of applications come from fairly poor backgrounds. US colleges aren’t so interested in what your parents or grandparents do, they want to know about you. If your guidance counselor is doing a recommendation and there is something in your background that has had a negative impact on grades or family finances (health issues, etc), they can talk about that. But just that you come from a family of manual laborers just doesn’t seem like Common App info to me.
