About Japanese (And Chinese) Studies

This post is going to be a bit hard to follow, so please bare with me! <3

I already enrolled in my Japanese Studies class, and it looks like this in my murrent class schedule:

JAPN 10A First Year Japanese 5.00 L Kameda, Noriko

567299 LE A00 08:00a - 09:20a TuTh HSS 2152
TU A01 08:00a - 08:50a MWF HSS 1106B
TU A02 09:00a - 09:50a MWF HSS 1106B
FI 12/05/2006 08:00a - 10:59a Tu TBA

And I was wondering, since there are two Tutorials listed, do I go to both, or do I elect to go to only one?

With my calculations, each week, I'll be going to Lecture for 2:40, and (if I choose to go to 1) Tutorial for 2:30 / (if I choose to go to 2) Tutorial for 5:00.

At first glance, I was expecting to go to both, but I did some more reasearch regarding summer -> fall scheduling and found this:

http://japan.ucsd.edu/pages/courses.html#Fall

According to that, students in the summer session went to Lecture for 9:10 and Tutorial for 8:45 a week.

If I were to make sense of this by trascribing the general ratio into the fall quarter over from summer, it would mean I'd be going to only 1 tutorial section a week.

Does anyone have any information regarding this? And I'm very sorry for being somewhat incoherent and jumpy with my information (it is 4am). :{

Thanks for any help coming my way, everyone.

I found this for you:

http://www-muir.ucsd.edu/ge/foreign.htm#jpn

This web site makes it look like you have to do all of them. Even though it does say 3 lectures and two tutorials per week, and yours is the other way around..

Maybe the other tutorial is the "language lab". ???

That is A LOT of hours for a class though...

And I don't think they would enroll you in both tutorials if you were only supposed to have one.

(Lol, up a bit late. But then again, so am I.)

Ouch, that's a lot of hours for a class.
That's a reason why I opted to do Fine Arts and Humanities, instead of Humanities and Foreign Language as I originally planned.
Both Japanese and Chinese sounded really really fun though... Oh well.

Diana, do you know if IB clears the foreign language GE? I got a 7 on the HL Spanish exam and all the school says is that I'm exempt from Linguistics 1C/1CX and 1D/1DX :

I thought the foreign language GE was to take 3 classes.
Looking at the Muir website, the foreign language GE is technically either 10A-B-C or 20A-B-C (no word of any C-D-E deal schmeal) so hmm. That is confusing. If your IB score clears you from Linguistics 1C and 1D, then maybe you can just take Spanish 1E (if there's such a thing) and be done with your foreign languages.

But I can imagine that the credit you got from the IB score goes toward that language only? I don't think you'd be able to skip in Japanese (not that you'd probably want to anyways).

is confused myself and just rambled

I'd say, email a counselor. :D
They respond pretty quick (at least the Sixth college ones did.)

Thanks.

I think I'll just call the Muir Academic Advising Office tomorrow; hopefully they're not swamped with calls and can get to me pretty quickly :

Sweet. Muir advising has great client service and didn't even put me on hold.

Got this taken care of.

Thanks, Jackie and Diana.

oyama, what exactly did you find out? Are you supposed to take all tutorial classes or one per MWF or one per week?

All tutorials. There's a reason it's a 5 unit class :
