HI! I was admitted to UNC and the college of arts and sciences. And I'm kinda wondering whether I should enroll. My intended major is MATHEMATICS. So anybody knows about how is the math department in UNC? Good or Bad? Thanks!

well its all relative really.
what other options do u have? (as in, where else have u gotten in?)

UIUC, UW-Madison, PSU, U Maryland..........

I know UIUC might be a good choice, but UNC is more diversified. and I'm interested in many areas. All I want to know is that is the math department in UNC bad or just OK?

anybody here???

Plz say something!!!

From what I've heard, it's just okay. I think the upper level math profs are pretty good, but when you're starting out they're not very good. Someone who has experience with the department should weigh in...

I think if the economics and business are decent in UNC, the math professors will be at least good enough, cuz these academic areas are interrelated.....

My d is a math major, and so far has been very impressed with the dept. We spoke with the Dept chair before deciding. She is now focused in on Mathematical decision sciences as her potential major. There are a lot of , options in Math,BA or BS Math major, applied mathematics, Mathematical decision sciences, several engineering options. she is a freshman so an upper classman can prob give more info on more classes.

My D said UNC is not known for mathematics but has a good dept. good faculty. Typically the engineering schools like MIT, CMellon, and others have stronger math depts. HOWEVER, they may have less mathematic majors offered and be geared towards engineering. That is her take.

thanks for your help!
i guess i will choose UNC to begin my freshman year!!!
so exciting!!!

Van, Congratulations. I still invite you to talk to the dept chair, as he was very informative and willing to discuss his dept. Each dept has its own chair--so you could talk to any of the major areas we discussed. DO take a freshman year seminar in one of the math courses, as they are not difficult and very interesting. D took Fractals, which only you math guys know what a fractal is and she enjoyed that class a lot. Best of luck!!

thanks! Personally I think math is very interesting. And I have fun learning it.
I talked to one of the professors in the department and we had a nice conversation. He gave me many advices.
Yep, you are right! I'll definitely talk to its chair!!! I guess all the faculties are nice in UNC.

That is one strong point for UNC, they are always willing to help, willing to talk, always ask about their research interests....you might find they need help!

Our S is a mathematical decision science major and has found the faculty to be very approachable. While UNC may not have the same reputation in mathematics as some of the programs mentioned, a double major with math or a minor in math coupled with a major from some of the other programs does provide many future options.

Does the double major have a lot of pressure? I mean can the students well handle all the stuff they have to learn in these two majors?

Some students seem to take fewer courses in their first year because they have to get used to the college life. Is that true?

Double majoring is really more a function of planning your schedule to accomodate the requirements of each major. It is a little easier if you come in with a reasonable number of AP credits, as it give you more flexibility. In either case, the downside is giving up the opportunity to take more electives in other areas.

Taking a little lighter load at least the first semester can be a good decision. You will be in a new environment, trying to make new friends and adjusting to college life in general. You will also be adjusting to the expectations and requirements of college level coursework. Not having to deal with an extra course can make everything go a little smoother.
