About non-tax filer statement for Brown University

I am an international applicant. I was going to submit the required documents for Brown University financial aid, and I found out they have a parent non-tax filer statement too. Now, my father has submitted a tax return in 2015, but my mother wasn’t required to do so.

But there are slots for both father’s and mother’s signatures at the end of the non-tax filer statement form Brown provided. There are slots for my father’s and mother’s names at the beginning, as contact information, as well.

I want to submit this non-tax filer form only for my mother, while I send them my father’s tax return. So which slots should be filled up?

You submit for the oarent who did not submit their own return. So…your mim’s name would go on it…and her signature.

In your country, did your dad file a joint return for both your mom and himself? In the U.S. that can be done…even when one parent doesn’t work. If your dad filed a joint return, then your mom has filed.

My father didn’t file a joint return, it was only for himself. Besides, My mother is a homemaker, so she has no income.

So, in the “signature” section, it will be only my mother.

How about the contact section? Will it be only my mother’s name there too? Or do I have to write both of my parents’ names in the contact section?

If the non-filers statement is for your mom only…her name should appear on it.

Your dad filed…he doesn’t need to complete a no-filers statement.

But do check with him about “joint returns” in your country. See if he did that. Here, it doesn’t matter that your mom didn’t work. If they lived here, your dad would have been able to file a tax return…married filing jointly…and they both would be on the return.

However, now I am facing a new confusion. In the non-tax filer form for me, the student information section says “please print”. Do I have to fill it up electronically?

Also, for the non-tax filer form for my mother, there is no such instructions. So do I fill that up electronically or manually?

Moreover, do I have to put all the signatures manually?

You fill the form out by hand and fax, post and scan and email it to Brown.
