just how important are they? I don't think any of mine teachers knows me well enough to check all the boxes on the recs. would that ruin me? any suggestions on how to get good recs? I was thinking about inviting my teachers to lunch or something, just to let them know me better.

I have heard that for stanford, you need really
good recs and really good essays because
everyone who applies there have really good
scores that are in about the same range...
(although there are exceptions). yes really :-)
Some books say you should give an outline
of your accomplishments (especially in their class)
to refresh their mind.
Good luck!

If there's a class in which you participate regularly, you could ask that teacher. To boost it, you could set up a lunch meeting like you said, or set aside time after school during which you can bring your resume (however large or small) and give the teacher a chance to learn more about you and ask any questions.

If you don't participate regularly in any classes, that's not a good sign... but not the end of the world. I would pick a teacher I like or a teacher for a subject I enjoy, and meet with them.
