I am a senior in high school and I am planning to request a single dorm for my freshman year. The school I will most likely be going to is UMass Lowell. I am going to write a letter explaining that I have anxiety disorder and non-verbal learning disorder and am not able to sleep with other people in the room. This is all true and I have records of my medical disorders. I know I can’t sleep with a roommate because my best friend, after leaving an abusive situation at home, moved in as my foster brother for our last year of high school, and I developed sleeping problems from not having silence and privacy when I sleep. I have a few questions about what needs to go into this letter. Obviously I want to write to them as soon as possible, but do I need to wait until I get notes from my psychiatrist, or can I just go ahead and write the letter and mention in it that I can get this verification?
Next, do I need to confirm that I am going to this school before I make this request? And if not, should I mention in the letter that this is an important factor in my college decision, or will that sound too stubborn? Any other advice you have for maximizing my chances to get a single dorm is greatly appreciated.
Were you accepted yet? Before doing anything, talk this over with your GC. Your request isn’t an obnoxious one. If you have the medical records to prove all this, that’s fine. However like I said, you might want to talk this over with your GC. The best option might be to just request the single dorm, see how the request goes, and if you are denied, then write the letter and mention you can give them verification if necessary.
You don’t have to wait for the psychiatrist but let him/her know that you might need the verification in the future. You don’t have to confirm going to the school unless you are putting a deposit down when you request, and don’t mention that it’s an important factor.
I have been accepted with varying amounts in scholarships to
UMass Lowell
UMass Amherst
UMass Dartmouth
Bridgewater State University
Wentworth Institute of Technology
Each of these schools should have a special office that works with students who have disabilities (ranging from learning issues to physical disabilities). Once you make a decision, communicate with that office, and let them communicate with the housing office on your behalf.
If you want to contact that office at UMass Lowell now, prior to making a commitment, feel free to do so. They’re there to help. Here’s the link:
And for goodness sakes, if that’s your real name, change your user name NOW!!! For your own safety and security, your user name should not be your real name.
