Hi! I recently just had a really bad interview. The Interviewer asked me about my school interested and I talked about me joining speech and debate to improve my communication and speech abilities. The thing is that with the recent school Lip Dub going on, me as a class council and as a member of the leadership class, I had missed multiple speeches and debate meetings. The interviewer asked me to talk about the debate topics, and I was only able to recall only 1 topic. She seemed very unimpressed and I was freaking out; resulting in me absolutely forgetting to tell her about how I was in leadership and was responsible for organizing Lip Dub for the whole school. Now to my interviewer, it just seems like I didn’t care about speech and debate and skipped many meetings. Is there any advice on how I can redeem myself? I am very scared. I genuinely thank you for reading my concerns and I hope someone can help.
Please don’t be so worried - you can write a really great essay about your organizing and leadership experiences.
Also guess what? I guarantee you that you were not the only freaked out 13 year old that AO has ever seen. They know that this is the 1st time many kids have done anything like this.
Whenever I feel I’ve messed up (and I am definitely not saying you did!) after feeling bad for awhile I try to come up with one or two things I learned from the experience, kind of finding the silver lining. Perhaps if you do that you’ll feel better?
I completely agree. There are very few kids your age who aren’t going to have many awkward moments in an interview. Definitely not enough to fill a BS class so they are going to have to take some kids who “messed up.” The thing is they aren’t looking for kids who can participate in a perfect interview, they are legitimately trying to get to know you.
My daughter has a friend about whom, every time I talk to her, I wonder how she made it past the interview portion. But she is a good member of the community!
I don’t know if this will change your perspective, but I am a reapplicant; meaning this is my second year being interviewed. Anyways, I thank you guys for all your advice! Any ideas on how to write a great essay?
