Are they covered in the financial aid?

What about the study-abroad ones?

Is the campus completely deserted during that time, or are there a lot of people there?

I believe for study abroad wintersession (and summer) programs you get the same proportion of financial aid as you do during the academic year. As of this year, wintersession was included in the tuition that you already pay – housing was also no cost this year. This system may change given the current economy, but no announcement about this has been made yet as far as I know.

During wintersession, there are definitely fewer students on campus than during the semester. Keep in mind it is January, and for those of us from the West coast and other warmer climates, I would much rather go home and enjoy some sun! That being said, I know the people who have stayed really enjoyed it. It’s a calmer time at Wellesley, less stress, and if you stay with your friends, you can spend lots of time together! The dining halls are not open during wintersession, so you can either cook your own meals (which can be really fun with groups of people!) or you can purchase a meal plan with food at the campus center.

starting next year only people who are taking classes or are on a sports team will be able to stay for wintersession at wellesley though

Okay, awesome. Thanks again for answering!

I know of someone who subletted a room in a graduate/undergraduate dormitory at MIT for January. Now this is not at all cheap ($700-1100), and I’m not sure what motivated her to do so, but if you really need a place and want to hang about MIT, it can be done.

I was at Wellesley during the wintersession for athletics. My dorm was practically empty, but it was kind of awesome because it meant that I got the tv all to myself. Sports teams train during the wintersession, others work at home or in Boston.

For this coming year during Wintersesion, the rumor is that only people taking classes at wellesley or on a sports team can stay in the residence halls - and you have to move to either Bates or McAfee. People involved in theater are currently working something out with the Theater Department for what to do about wintersession.

Wintersession is an awesome time to be on campus. You can take a class or you can do something completely stress free. Being part of the frisbee team we spent hours in the gym throwing and we had a lot of fun cooking together since there is no meal plan. I understand why they need to limit the people on campus in January, but its a really unique time to be on campus.
The plan for next year is that only people who play a winter sport, take a class or are working an on campus job will be able to stay. I believe that the cost of housing for winter session will no longer be included in spring semester’s tuition. Also, they are cutting all the noncredit courses and limiting the on campus courses to introductory foreign language courses (specifically in the not so popular departments). They are NOT cutting the amount of off campus courses. Those on campus will be living in the new dorms, so if you live there during the fall and are not returning over wintersession you will need to completely move yourself out of your room.

goalie - what are the “new dorms”?

New Dorms are Freeman, Bates, McAfee.

Yes, cooking during wintersesh is fun! Athletes got the meal plan, though, I just hope that won’t be changing next year.
