I’m a nontraditional student. I have 2 associate degrees. I’m taking a program that I was really gung-ho about in the beginning, but since then I just am not sure I will fit in the field.
I’ve made few to no connections on campus. My gpa is over 3.5. I tried clubs but most met at bad times for my classes. Plus, I have an hour commute over dark roads so late night didn’t work out either.
I am on my last semester and need an internship outside my area.
I’m guessing I might be better off with a graduate degree in another area.
are you graduating from a 4 year college?
What degree did you get? What program is it?
You may be able to get a variety of jobs with a 4 year degree…you don’t necessarily have to go get a graduate degree.
Have you gone to the career center?
It’s a BA in Art admin/management. You are expected to make connections for internship seeking on your own. The career center helped with my CV but they have nothing else really for this major.
I would contact your professors for connections for the internship. Where have other students gone? Institutions probably take a new intern every year.
Look at institutions in your area…theaters, museums, galleries, music venues
They probably do internships all the time
Can you do one at your college?
I googled "art management internships " and if you look at the results like
https://www.american.edu/cas/arts-management/student-profiles.cfm
you can get a bunch of ideas of the type of places you could reach out to.
You may not necessarily need to get another degree before finding a career in a field outside of your major. Data from the Federal Reserve Bank in New York indicates that fewer than 30% of grads are in a career closely related to their majors. There are a few ways to pursue careers outside of your major – here are some tips – https://www.collegeconfidential.com/articles/does-your-college-major-determine-your-future-career
I would connect with alums with art management degree from your school via Linkedin or alumni office. Write to them. Have a chat with them about what they are doing and get their advice on how to get an internship/job. I have students from my alma mater reach out to me all the time.
You also do not necessary need to get a job related to your major.
I think you should get some work experience instead of getting another degree that you do not know what to do with.
Thank you. I’ve been connecting to some. Last one I talked to went for her graduate degree and entered as a development manager.
I very strongly urge you to get an internship in your field, so you can really decide if it’s for you or not. In addition, build work experience in other areas as well, as many fields don’t care what your major was, so long as you got the degree and have some related work/career experience. This will give you flexibility in terms of direction once you graduate.
Once you graduate, get a job and work for a couple of years. Use that time to figure out what you want to do next. Don’t go to grad school until you know which program will get you where you want to go, if any. You need direction - yet another degree won’t give that to you. You need to get direction first, then consider grad school.
