Hi,
Posting here since applying for a second-degree at most of the colleges I’ve looked at means applying as a Transfer anyways (unless there’s a better forum!? help!)
Completed my Bachelor’s degree at a liberal arts college, studied a bit of everything but the official major was Art. I know the MFA is in my future but felt the undergraduate major was really weak at my school- it was an Ivy with a strong Art grad program but it felt like the undergraduate program wasn’t as important to them, and was still more theoretical than practical. I’d like to go back to school get some actual technical skills.
Why? I’d feel more confident as an artist to be sure, but also, lacking technical skills is what keeps me from applying to arts jobs or art education jobs that require expertise in things I have no experience with.
I need leads on how to go back to school/or studying with some kind of funding. They can be postbacc options, second bachelor’s programs, fellowships, etc.
I feel shy but I had to ask. Thank you!
The only money for a second bachelor is unsubsidized federal student loans. However, you are now independent because you already have an undergrad degree, so you can borrow at the higher level.
Do you want or need an MFA? What is missing in your education and experience that is necessary for the MFA program? How much of the coursework can you pick up on the cheap at a community college or in-state public U? Must the training be credit classes, or can you get the skills in non-credit classes through the continuing ed divison of a CC or 4-year institution or at a local art center of some kind?
Overall, I agree with @happymomof1. Do your current career options require/favor job applicants with SPECIFICALLY an MFA? If not, perhaps consider what @happymomof1 suggested and research other options on how to gain the technical skills you need without having to necessarily get another degree or even an MFA.
I would NOT get a second bachelor’s in your case at all. You could always look for experience in your community or fellowships, but it is not worth the money to get a 2nd bachelor’s degree unless you are very wealthy and it doesn’t matter to you.
