About voice major

Hi i'm trying to be in college with voice major
I just have a few questions to ask
For the audition, do i have to sing opera to major classic voice?
I heard some schools have to sing opera and some schools do not have to sing opera.
If there are some schools that opera singing is not necessary, can i know list of those schools?
Thank you

I recommend finding several schools that you’re interested in first and then narrowing down based on audition requirements, program nuances, etc. Music programs typically have audition requirements listed very clearly on their websites. If you can’t find them by browsing, a nice google search should do the trick.

Are you more interested in jazz or contemporary instead of classical? There are some schools that specialize or have those programs available.

If you really hate opera, maybe a major in classical voice isn’t for you because I would think you’d have to sing some of that eventually at most schools. Maybe consider jazz/contemp like ^ suggested, or consider music ed maybe.

If you need help looking for jazz or contemporary schools I’d be happy to give you a nice detailed list. If you want to stick with classical but avoid opera, I’d try schools that are open to various styles such as University of the Arts. Their voice major is called “jazz voice” but it also encompasses classical/choral and some musical theatre. If you’re more into Baroque or Renaissance music, consider applying to voice programs with an emphasis on early music. Case Western has a good early music ensemble open to undergrads, and I’m sure some other music schools have emphases or majors in it too.

As an opera singer in her 7th year in training, I will advice you that any good voice program is going to have you doing a lot of opera and classical music. That is one of the biggest areas in a voice major. If you don’t like it I strongly suggest you look into maybe jazz, or musical theatre.

In addition to jazz and contemporary there are schools that are more focused on sacred or choral works. It would help us help you if you let us know where your interests lie.
