ABRSM grade equivalent of AP Music Theory

What ABRSM grade level of music theory is equivalent to the level of music theory taught in AP Music Theory? Does APMT exceed the theory taught up to and including Grade 8?

Will APMT be difficult if I am proficient in music theory up to and including ABRSM Grade 8 music theory?

Grade 7 IMO

If you have perfect pitch the AP Music theory exam will be a piece of cake. If you go not you may still do well (esp if you can get a distinction on ABRSM Grade 8 theory) but the curve will be blown by “pitch *****es”

Okay, I just found this and since I didn’t want to create a new thread I will ask this

Should I do grade 7 music theory under ABRSM, Trinity or LCM?

This is probably not the best thread but whatever.

I want or also use this thread to ask a question:

In our high school, the prerequisite for taking “AP Musical Theory” course is ” Musical Theory 1”.
My question is: if one has already taken the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory of Music exam and passed with distinction, does s/he has enough Music Theory knowledge to skip ” Musical Theory 1” and to take “AP Musical Theory” directly? I will check with the high school later, but want to ask here first.

So according to the posters above, AP Music Theory is equivalent to about Grade 8 so you might have to study a bit more for that.

I passed ABRSM Grade 5 theory with distinction (more than a year ago) and I’m taking AP Music Theory right now.

You will probably not be completely lost if you know grade 5 theory, but at the same time, you will probably not be lost if you know how to read music. The grade 5 theory material is pretty basic compared to AP Music (equivalent to maybe the first month or two). Melodic and harmonic dictation and sight-singing are not on ABRSM grade 5 theory (I don’t know about higher grades), but are definitely in AP Music. This obviously depends on how the high school’s course is taught; our class only has the ability to read music and some instrumental/vocal experience as a prerequisite, so YMMV.

To energize:

Thanks for your explanation. When you say “probably not be completely lost” made me feel that even passing ABRSM grade 5 theory test, still probably will be lost in AP Music Theory.
Could you share what textbook you are using for your AP Music Theory class? I probably will buy one in order to well prepare for AP Music Theory course. Or do you have any advice on how to prepare this course if one can just pass ABRSM grade 5 theory without any further Music Theory knowledge. Thanks.

I didn’t know what the heck ABRSM was… so I googled and found the sylabus.

ABRSM Grade 8 is definitely where the AP Music Theory exam is.

But it really depends where your Music Theory class starts. Mine started from the very, very basics. We started with learning what chords were (AC#E, etc.) and what they meant. We started with learning to listen to intervals. I mean… We started with the absolute basics. By the end of the year, we were extremely prepared though and my class had a 100% pass rate.

It was a devilish exam for me and the aural stuff sucks.

To AuGirl,

Looks like your school’s AP Music Theory does not need any prerequisite, and does not well prepare you guys for AP test

^100% pass isn’t a well prepared AP class? I don’t understand your theory behind that…

And no. It doesn’t. Last year was the first time it was even offered.

But one girl took music theory this year at her college, and the professor was just like “Why are you even in here? You’ve already completed all of the material for undergrad theory…”

I think we were very well prepared.

To AuGirl,

Maybe I misunderstood you. I thought you think the AP test was hard.

In our high school AP Music Theory test is just a one semester course. How about in your school? one semester or one year?

3 is pass, right? Do you know how much percent pass with 5?
