Academic Achievements and Research Paths

Hi I am a sophomore in high school and I have a strong passion for math and computer science. I was wondering what competitions I should enter, or any type of research I could do that would help improve my future applications, and just expand my knowledge overall. I would also like to know of any good summer programs to partake in.

Please respond to help me out

Hello! I am in a similar situation as you. I am going to participate in a math circle in the future as well as a science honors program . If you want to do research, I suggest trying to find out from a local college if there are any labs that you can research in with a mentor (I am not doing research so I don’t know that much about it). If your project is good, you might try to enter ISEF or Siemens (Big, prestegious contests).

As for math, preparing for AMC is pretty fun, USAMTS is a fun contest where you submit proof solutions every month (Already ended). Join your school math team if you didn’t already.

Best website in the whole world of math: AOPS

For Computer Science: I don’t know much in this field, but my friends are doing USACO, which is an online coding contest I believe. Also, hack-a-thons seem like pretty fun events.

Now summer programs:

go to the AMS website for a long list of math summer programs. There are a wide range of levels included, but there is bound to be some that suit your level.
For starters, PROMYS, SuMaC, MathCamp USA/Canada are some of the harder ones
AwesomeMath is pretty well known although not very selective, but I know many people who loved their experience there
There are many in California, etc, really, it is going to end up depending on where you live.

Anyways, this reply was really bad and all over the place, but I hope you can draw some info from it. Good luck in your future math career!
