My parents want me to go because they think it's really special for me to have been invited. I doubt that this is the case. Just because the letter they sent says that the event is "designed to introduce selected high school seniors" etc. - selected being the key word - my parents think this is like do or die. My dad is driving me crazy, saying things like "Don't you want to get in!?" as if it all depends on whether or not I go to this academic day. Can someone please provide some insight on this?

Edit: Okay, it's been decided that I'm going. I think I would be crazy to pass this up, and my parents are willing to pay the expenses to get me there, so I'm doing it. I'm pretty excited. But still, anyone else going?

I totally neglected to mention that this Academic Day has to do with the school of journalism. I have submitted my app, transcripts, recommendations, etc. I listed business as my major on the app, though, so I'm not sure why I got invited to this particular event. My SAT writing score is strong & I have some journalism-related ECs. Maybe I listed journalism as one of my interests on the SATs in May.

Oh, and swoopes, I'm out of state, and I'm going! :]

I went to that last year! It was pretty awesome; I'd recommend going.

And I think they invite you based on your PSAT or SAT score & listed "intended major" from standardized tests because I only knew one other person invited, and he had also received higher-end scores and expressed interest in journalism as a major.
I'm in-state, by the way, and now I'm a freshman at Carolina.

Your dad's right. They actually do keep track of who attends these events. The more you visit, the better. It's silly not to go to these events unless you aren't able to. Plus, the food is generally good, and all the events I went to (Academic Day, Carolina 101, dang, who knows what else) left me with a good feeling about UNC. I don't think it's based on SATs, because I was one of the only people from my high school invited last year, but I had a lower SAT score compared to a lot of the strong students at my high school. I have no clue what it's based on.

Oh, cool, I'm glad to hear feedback from people who have been to these events.

I think I gave the wrong impression in my post. I'm so stressed out about college that it's really easy for me to get frustrated by my parents when they get involved. I assume that at least a few people on this forum have felt the same, haha. :] But really, I'm extremely excited to go to this. The more time I get to spend at UNC, the better. Plus it'll be awesome to get out of the upstate New York cold for a couple of days.

Question though, what should I wear? Will this event be completely casual?

I'm not sure what you should wear, but I do want to warn you that it might be colder than you're expecting. Tonight it's supposed to get down into the 30s. That's probably not NY cold, but it's not exactly balmy either, so check the forecast for Chapel Hill before you pack.

My son was invited as well and I thought everyone who applied was invited. He is not interested in journalism and nothing on his application would indicate that he is. He is very interested in UNC but we are out of state (NewJerseyMom screen name says it all) and it would be very difficult to travel there for the one day. After reading the other posts, maybe we should reconsider.

Dress is casual, you will be fine in jeans and a t-shirt if you want. And this is more of an informational session anything. It's not do or die or anything like that. It's great to go but no biggie if you can't. The main purpose of this event is recruitment. Just to get people interested in applying. For people who have not yet submitted an application, it is supposed to make them want to apply. For people who have submitted an application, it is intended to increase interest in UNC and push UNC to the top of your list for universities to which you have already applied. They want to make you choose UNC over UVA, NC State, or Duke or which other colleges you have applied to as well.

I did not go to Academic DAy, I went to High School Honors Day, but ultimately these programs have a common goal in mind. Making You WANT to go to UNC.
