Hello,
I’ve already applied as a transfer student this year to a few schools, but I was recently found responsible in a case regarding academic honesty. I’m a CS major, and one of my friends wanted to see my code, so I just sent it over to him since I was in my room. Unknown to me, he ended up submitting practically the same code with minor changes which were caught by the system. We were both penalized, and given a minor penalty of simply a 0 and overall grade reduction, with no explicit indication on my transcript, which I’m grateful for.
I am wondering if this will cause any potential offers to be rescinded? I am currently trying to get it reduced as I was the “giver” and not the receiver, but I understand that I’m still at fault for that. I just want some genuine advice on what is the likely outcome in May.
Your final grade will drop, and if it is a big drop that will show on your final transcript. If the drop is big enough, any offers of admission might be rescinded.
Go have a chat with your advisor about this, and find out what they have observed occurring for previous students in your situation.
that happened to me once. when it comes to code, never trust that your classmates won’t copy verbatim what you wrote. for me, i finished my assignment and one of my classmates couldn’t figure out the assignment & it was due the same night. he asked me if he could look at my code to “see how it works” and he wouldn’t copy it. needless to say, he took my code and turned it in verbatim with the exception of changing a few variable names. it’s really frustrating when you do the assignment too. after that, i would never send my code to someone or let them copy mine; nor copy others.
it sucks because i had a good relationship with that professor, to the point where i asked for a recommendation letter & after that I couldn’t do that anymore. lesson learned.
