Hello, Can anyone comment on the academic engagement of the students at Lawrence? I saw some comments on College ******* that indicate many were not engaged but the professors were great. How would this school be for a gifted and talented student?

I would send your son to visit. That is what I did and mine chose it over other schools. It was a wonderful learning environment for him.

I know gifted and talented students attending Lawrence now. They are very happy with Lawrence. (The same holds of those who have graduated.) Yes, perhaps “many” students are not as egaged academically as much as one might hope, but many, many more are very engaged and take there work very seriously. (Many of them also take various forms of play seriously–they are energetic, hardworking, pleasant, intelligent young men and women.) As overseas suggests, a visit is a good idea.

My D is a 2nd year student at Lawrence, and from what she tells me, the students are very engaged and intellectually curious. Many students she knows turned down more prestigious schools (e.g. Macalester, Carleton). Much of the discourse outside of class centers on world and local issues. Of course there are exceptions, but given the high quality of the teaching and small class size, how much you get out of it is up to you.

I really enjoyed my visit to Lawrence in February. Unfortunately, my merit scholarship was among the lowest I received from other LAC’s so I won’t be attending. I think it would be a fun four years though!
