Academic Interest Part of Future Plans

Hi,

There is an academic interest section of the Future Plans section, and in it, it asks you to name your top 3 academic interests. Now many of the interests listed are not majors that are offered by the schools I am applying to.

For example: Columbia does not have an International Relations major nor does it have a Pre-Law major, yet my academic interests go as follows:

1) International Relations
2) Political Science
3) Pre-Law

Will Columbia look down upon me that my top interest is not a major offered at their university? Will that be a reason for rejection or deferral (I'm applying early decision)?

Wouldn’t your academic interest be law, not prelaw? It is my understanding that they are asking about the fields you like most, not your intended major.

The academic interests listed in Future Plans apply to all member colleges and are therefore intentionally general. Do not worry if they do not correspond to particular majors at the colleges to which you are applying. Many colleges will ask about specific programs and majors on their supplements.

I persoanlly don’t think they look that much into that section.
