academic medicine/research

Can somebody summarize how the timeline goes for an MD to get a faculty position/research training?

Medical school (4 years)-->residency(3-4 years)--> fellowship (4 years?)

Is it necessarily in that order? Is the residency absolutely required? What does a fellowship entail? Thanks!

Depends on your specialty. Residencies can last anywhere from three to seven years. Fellowships are usually either one or two. The residency is required to practice medicine. A fellowship entails further specialization.

What about fellowships of the ring?

After this 12 year journey will there be a return of the king?

What exactly does the MD do in a fellowship? So I'm assuming the residency is required for participation in a fellowship?

In my hospital fellowships in our program are 3 years. One must complete internship and residency prior to the fellowship years.
The first year of fellowship is a clincal year---intense inpatient and outpatient work, learning how to be a sub-specialist. The last 2 years involve intense outpatient clinic work, occasional inpatient coverage but primarily these years are reserved for research...depending on the interest of the fellow it may be clinical research or basic/bench research

One does not simply work in Mordor.
