I got into UPENN for Fall 2006..
The problem is that I have been accussed of plagiarism for a paper in a college specific writing class in Spring 2005. My transcript showed a IP when I applied but after June since a year is going to pass, it is gonna show a F. But my hearing will come up in September i.e after I have already transferred.

Do you guys think UPENN will revoke my admission even though it is a plagiarism case of last year and I am completely innocent...

this is extremely serious and constitutes grounds for having your admissions rescinded.

you need to have this worked out such that Penn does not see that F -- i don't think that you can explain plagiarism...even being accused of it is enough to provoke a rescindment.

perhaps you can have this entire affair expedited so that you can be cleared before June.

edit: IP = in progress (grade to be determined/posted)

edit II: Penn requires that all grades be shown on official transcripts, even for classes taken P/NP -- how did you explain this when you were applying since it's from Spring 2005?

Well, it showed an IP and they didnt care...They accepted inspite of the IP....Well, in my personal statement, I wrote that how due to technical issue, I have been accussed of plagiarism...4 lines of my 15 page essay matches dat of a website...and its ridiculous, that the university has already taken a year to resolve this issue...

I would call the admissions office tomorrow, explain to them your situation and get it dealt with as quickly as possible. The longer you wait, and as they go longer into the process the less willing and understanding they will be of you. Furthermore, you do not want to give them the impression you were trying to hide this any longer, by calling first thing in the morning you could explain it with the argument that you saw the final paragraph on the admissions letter that stated the decision was dependent on your final transcript, did not know this before and wanted to get it dealt with as soon as you knew this. Also, upenn may already know this information if the school or your dean sent something to them in his letter of good standing and that could explain your rejections from the other schools you seemed qualified for.

Did the 4 lines match verbatim? Man that is some scary ish to experience. I've known people who were forced to change schools due to plagiarism (in their cases however, they were guilty).

well, im perfectly in good academic standing and even the dean knows that it is a technical problem and that since UCSD is a huge university, there is not enough people to resolve these issues quickly...and I have only been accussed of plagiarism and nothing has been proved or is there any chance of it being proved because I did not cheat and its just because of UCSD's inefficiency which is responsible for this...plus I have sued the university for mental harassment and inordinate delay of proceedings.......

yeah those lines match verbatim..but the thing is that those lines were put on www on 16th June and my paper was submitted on 4th June. so it is totally ridiculous.....but the school loves to keep these things hanging and making life worse for innocent students....

jesus christ!!
Posting here is like getting an instant blessing....I checked my school email for the first time in a while, I just saw an email from the Dean saying that :

The Chair of the Academic Dishonesty Hearing Board went through evidence to resolve allegations of a violation of Section 22.16.10.10. of the Student Conduct Code involving academic misconduct, alleged to have occurred on or about June 4, 2005 in UCSD MMW 3. The nature of the alleged conduct involves the copying of work from outside sources and submitting it as your own for academic credit without attributing the source. The merit of the allegation is decided to be untrue and there is no question of plagiarism in the submitted work of ........... Hence the paper would be evaluated again by an independent reader, and a grade will be assigned within 14 working days.

pepsicokevodka...this has to be a nightmare for you. I hope everything works out in your favor. Seriously. Convictions, let alone, accusations of plagiarism can completely shatter one's life.

yeah for sure...I had to take psychological counselling after this...Especially, if you are innocent, it is hard to cope up with accusations...trust me, it is a nightnmare...well, after today, i breathe a sigh of relief.....universities show no emotions and take like a year to prove if you are innocent or not...i sued my university, so hopefully my fellow students wouldn't have to suffer like me...trust me, you might get just get unlucky and get screwed due to technical stuff and no fault of your own...

I'm sorry that you had to deal with the matter, but I'm extremely happy for you that everything has worked out. You're basically smacking UCSD for going to UPenn. :) Congratulations!

Was this situation one of the reasons you wanted to transfer out in the first place? Good game either way.

Wow, good going. I had a teacher accuse me of this in high school and although she didn't budge on the charge, the penalty was less severe (F on the 1 assignment out of like 20).

In highschool, my spanish teacher accused me of plagiarism because she said my paper was way too good for me to write. The case was resolved as not plagiarizing but she still gave me 75 for the grade. During the time of incident, I was really disturbed and worried about the consequences and I could totally understand pepsi taking mental counseling.
