My daughter is a junior researching MT programs (mostly BFA). She visited Pace last summer and absolutely loved it. I pulled the BFA MT curriculum, and the courses in the major are exactly what she wants. It also has 44 credits core curriculum listed, but I can’t find information anywhere on what those requirements are. She would also be applying to the Honors College. She is looking for a challenging academic program, but with flexibility in course selection. Can anyone share their experience with the overall program at Pace?
My son and daughter are at Pace BA-Acting. The core curriculum for Dyson CAS (Performing Arts School) is the same for all majors. It is truly a liberal arts education beyond the arts majors.
My son is also in the Honors College (which requires certain courses and a thesis). The honors students have access to a special longue with free printing. Also have options for several leadership activities / trips. And they get $$ that they can use for research, study abroad, etc.

Thank you for sharing this! My daughter visited Pace last summer, and absolutely loved it. She would be applying to for BFA MT and the Honors College as well, and is looking for exactly what you described: “challenging academic program, but with flexibility in course selection.” He one deal breaker on the academics (other than not wanting a very prescriptive course sequence overall) is that if a language is required, they offer ASL. The links you gave clarify that it IS an option.
coronado, what has your kids’ experience been? Would love to hear about the living experience, how students treat each other, and if they feel it is preparing them for the realities of the professional world. We are intentionally steering away from programs that are solely acting; The courses in “Industry for BFA Musical Theatre” and “Musical Theatre Audition Technique” are part of the draw. Then she fell in love on the campus tour
@lmkiker - here’s a stab. PM if you have questions.
Living situation (2 halls for freshman) - most freshman live in Maria’s tower (least expensive), which is a traditional resident hall (doubles with communal bathrooms and a common area on each floor). It is connected to the main classroom bldg, Cafeteria, and library. 182 Broadway is a 5 min walk and is a newer dorm - mostly triples with private bathrooms. Only one large communal area with kitchen. Both have laundry and exercise equip on site. There is an Honors floor. You can take a virtual tour on the web.

Students interaction - the Perf Arts students are a tight group because the training is intense and all love what they do. They work hard at academics too - Perf Arts has the highest proportion of students enrolled in honors college. Many are tour guides and RAs too. Supportive environment from students and faculty.

Preparation - can’t beat NYC as an extension of the classroom. An initial class assignment was to get a library card to the NY Library for the Performing Arts (an amazing place with archived videos of Broadways shows). My freshman daughter has attended ~1-2 shows per week (broadway, off-broadway or School Performances) Think of these as lab classes without tuition! Cost is minimal or free (Pace gets complimentary tickets or deep discounts). Some commercial dance students are working Rockettes, and the school doesn’t discourage auditioning outside of school as long as you don’t miss class. (Mine auditioned for Dear Evan Hanson last weekend. Doesn’t expect anything to come of it but it was a great learning experience. She also takes local masterclasses with casting directors and Broadway actors on weekends). If a student lands a job - they try to work it out (ie-take a break and re-enroll). The profs are working artists so the students get real world perspective and experiences. Note that my knowledge is limited to the BA-Acting IPE, which is very flexible so that many have internships as upperclassman (MTs might not have as much free time in curriculum).
I am a junior looking into Pace as well! I would also be applying to the Honors College. Do you get academically accepted to pace first and then accepted into the BFA prorgam, or is it all at once?
@elledaspitzer My D got her academic acceptance first and has yet to audition.
