Academic Scholarships

Hey, I was wondering how common non-need based scholarships are, and some of the different qualifications for them. Have you heard of students getting a full-ride (or a big %)? Does it effect your chances if you are from out of state???

Northwestern does not give merit money. All awards are need based. Check out the the northwestern financial aid site for more info.

See, the website tells one thing, the students tell another :D It's the EVIL world of university politics. Apparently, they can give athletic scholarships, but also some small merit-based scholarships. This is rumor one of my friends who is a freshman at NU says that he knows that they can give merit-based, but it's not common. So, yeah, it's still REDICULOUSLY high priced, it's almost nauseating lol.

Northwestern is a Big Ten private school (the only one). Because it's in the Big Ten, it can give athletic scholarships unlike the Ivies, but because it's private, the state you are from has no bearing on anything (at least not officially).

I personally haven't heard anything about merit scholarships.

Northwestern's aid is awarded to students based solely on demonstrated financial need, including the Northwestern Scholarship. However, Northwestern participates in the National Merit and National Achievement scholarship programs; the amount of National Merit awards will range from a minimum of $500 up to $2000.

It is possible to get an academic scholarship to northwestern, however the academic scholarships handed out are private funds dedicated to that specific purpose, and are not part of northwestern-awarded aid (northwestern as an institution does not give out academic scholarships)

To get one of these academic scholarships (which are generally small, totalling around $3,000 a year from what I've heard) you need BOTH a 34+ on your ACT and a 1550+ on your SAT.

If you qualify for one of these scholarships, you will be notified automatically upon admission, without having to apply separately for it, however the money is not provided through northwestern, but rather a private fund.

EDIT: i realized the northwestern admissions rep just posted above me, my post is just what i've heard from students receiving such scholarships

What about for international students? and if you are interested in the HPME program?
