Academic scholarships?

At the moment, I'm mainly looking at Wash U or the not-as-well-known Creighton University.
But Creighton is pretty much winning because I can go for $5000 a year (plus it's close to home and I'd probably be rooming with my best friend).
So although I could afford Wash U, I'm really looking for scholarships. After all, I don't want to be too terribly in debt when I could go somewhere else for essentially free.

So what are the academic scholarships like at Wash U?
I'm a junior, first in my class, 4.0 UW / 4.7 W, looking into math or physics for a major.

WUSTL has quite a few scholarship programs providing a few thousand dollars to half and full ride; the problem is that as far as I know, you had to fill out extra applications for all of them; all of which were due 1/15.

The OP is only a junior so there is plenty of time to apply for scholarships! Here is a link to portion of the Wash U website that deals with scholarships.

Academic Scholarships

If you are a junior and decide to apply to WashU, with your credentials, make sure that you apply for Danforth Scholars. It is a great program (either half or full tuition and can be combined with other merit awards) that is not listed with the other merit awards. Your GC has to nominate you. GC can obtain the nomination form from WashU admissions and the nomination is due in early fall of your senior year.

Compton (math/physics scholarship) and Danforth (and maybe Ervin if you feel like applying for more.)

Each gives out at most 4 full scholarships and a few half-tuition scholarships.

Sorry, somehow completely missed the part about being a junior.

Keep in mind that each scholarship can ask for up to 5 essays (4 shorts and a long). Because WUSTL has no supplement on Common App though, you can use the extra time for those.

jenkster - the number of scholarships awarded for Danforth are about 16 a year and Ervin about 50+ a year

Oops, I could've sworn I read on the pamphlet that they gave 4 full, but hey, 16's just peachy with me!

if I applied for a scholarship would they let me know of the decision in the admissions decision letter? Or does scholarship stuff come out later

jenkster, they used to be 16, this year there are 4 full tuition and at least 6 half tuition (about 5000 applications).
Scholarships usually come before admissions letters, like an early celebration (between last two weeks of February).

I thought last year and in years prior, the scholarship notifications were mailed the first week of March. Maybe someone else on cc can confirm this.

thanks guys ( i hope its in February)

Last year the notifications were mailed the last week of February but some kids got phone calls before that.

Do they let you know if you didn't get one? Or is it they only mail the semi's?

jenkster - To give you a definative reply and dispel some of the false postings on the number of Ervin and Danforth scholarships, I contacted the program coordinators. For the past 3 years the numbers have been the following:

Year Ervin Danforth
2005 - 42 16
2006 - 50 21
2007 - 41 23

Scholarship applications are being considered at this time. Although the exact number for each program has not been finalized, the expectation is that there will be about 20 Danforths and between 40 to 50 Ervins for the current group of applicants. There are absolutely no plans to reduce the number from previous years. Invitations to Scholars interview weekend will be extended towards the end of February.

Thanks you very much for the stats!

Do the ~20 Danforth scholars all receive full tuition scholarships? Or does that count also include partial scholarships?

The 20 includes both half and full tuition awards. In addition to the Scholars awards WashU can also award combo need/merit scholarships like the Elliot and others. I know of quite a few people that have been awarded multiple scholarships by WashU. Students can also be part of more than 1 Scholars programs.

Does anybody know about how many people apply for each scholarship??

and does anyone know about how many people get the rodriguez scholarship?

@optical illusion:

I don't know if anyone's told you this (sorry if they have and this is repetitive!) but in most cases, you don't want to room with a good friend. Even though you know each other, you may not be compatible as roommates. Many best friends end up fighting when they room together, and a great friendship is destroyed. When the time for college apps comes, keep that in mind.
