Can anyone shed any light on academic separation (after first semester plebe year) for an athlete at a service academy? Most colleges will not consider transfers if applicant is not in good academic standing and not eligible to return to the school they left. A separated cadet has no way to become eligible to return to a service academy if academically separated. Then there are NCAA rules to consider - such as if the student attends a 2 year college after a 4 year, it automatically means they must graduate from the 2 year and then sit out a year. Can anyone shed any light on this? I can't believe that this means the cadet has no chance to play sports or get into a four year college.

My understanding is that you have five years of eligibility to play four years of a varsity sport under current NCAA rules. Rules regarding transfer from one NCAA school to another depend upon the division level of the school transfering from to the school you want to transfer into (Division 1 to Division 3 or Division 2 to Division 1???). As a rule of thumb, a transfer student looses one year of NCAA eligibility upon transfer. I have never heard of a school rejecting an applicant because he or she was dismissed from a previous school for academic reasons. You apply to the new school and if accepted and upon review of your academic history the courses you "passed" at your previous school are credited but grades are not included in your GPA. If you formally practiced or played with an NCAA recognised team you are considered to have used your one year of eligibility upon transfer.
