Hello,
Long story short -
3.58GPA with 16 credit hours under my belt through a community college.
Transferred to a four year institution.
Took one single class, failed, then placed under academic suspension for my performance.
What do you guys think?
Realistically, I might be bummed out by this turn of events, but I thought that I could simply move and start over. But what does having the suspension on my record entail? Am I forever ineligible for financial aid? How will a suspension affect the admissions process to undergraduate programs or even graduate programs in the distant future?
Thank you all for any input.
It doesn’t work like that. There is a student clearinghouse database that schools check.
No, but whatever school you go to will have SAP requirements that you need to meet.
How about worrying about undergrad first. You will need to talk to any school you consider to see what you need to do to get off academic suspension/probation. They may have different requirements than the school you just left.
Please clarify the situation for me.
Are academic suspensions institution specific or universal? That is to say, are you implying that I was not suspended from one college - I was suspended from all academic institutions?
The issue is that many colleges will not accept you as a transfer unless you left your previous university in good standing. If you were suspended, you are not in good standing. You would need to check with whatever university you plan to attend next about their policies regarding transfer students. Many community colleges have open enrollment, which means they will take students who are not in good standing.
Thank you very much for the explanation.
Why did you fail the course?
I failed the course due to inadequate testing scores. These scores coincided with my typical performance during the lab portion of the course and subsequent invitation to a teaching position as an undergraduate TA. I would like to believe that my performance illustrates, if anything, the basic necessity for the reasonable accommodations I am entitled to. I do perform adequately without any accommodation in areas where I do not require assistance. The institution I am involved with is non-compliant with the ADA standards and I therefore struggled without specific accommodations involving small modifications with note taking and testing. I think I need to consult with a lawyer now.
Edit/More relevant:
But for the appeal process itself I intend to focus less on what I cannot control, (ADA compliance), and focus more on myself and what I can change. I will include additional time in remedial therapy while demonstrating my typical performance under more ideal settings. Maybe I can additionally audit courses during my suspension to display how motivated I am to continue.
You don’t write very clearly.
You flunked the tests.
I have no idea what you are saying here. From your first post you took only one class. They don’t offer TA positions based on one class, particularly if you flunk.
There is nothing wrong with politely asking for some clarification.
Many courses contain a lecture portion and a lab portion. You’re just going to have to take my word for it that I have excelled in the lab portion of the course and possess correspondence with a lab coordinator on making arrangements to be a undergraduate TA. Maybe the situation leaves a lot of meritocratic ethics to be desired. I don’t know what else I can tell you, Erin’s Dad, but I’m grateful for your time and patience with me.
The lab portion of the course focuses on conducting research and writing papers. My lowest paper grade as an A- while the other two are solid A’s. I am neither entitled nor respective to any form of accommodations in the lab portion of the course.
While the lecture portion of the course, on the other hand, requires a skillset that my disability interferes with. My grades reflect that because I received one C and then failing marks in this lecturte portion which brought my course GPA to a resounding D+. I do have documentation that states I am entitled to some accommodations that modify both note and test-taking. So I ultimately failed the course because of my poor performance and maybe my accommodation would have helped in some small way.
All I can tell you is that before this semester my lowest GPA for a course was a B+. My transcript certainly indicates that I excel well enough with accommodation when it is reasonable. The course itself reflects that I struggle without my entitled accommodation while simultaneously excel when accommodations are no longer reasonable. I cannot control whether or not my institution complies with the ADA so I am not inclined to focus on the topic during readmission. What do you think?
Is there anything else I should be doing or do differently than I intend?
