Academy Nomination

I received a nomination a couple of days ago from my represenatative and I was just wondering if it is likely that I will now be accepted into the academies or have there been cases in which a candidate has received a nomination, but has not been accepted into the academy regardless of having received a nomination? Thanks in advance!

I think you’ll get responses by posting in the correct subforum: [Naval Academy - Annapolis - College Confidential](Naval Academy - Annapolis - College Confidential Forums)

If you meet the general requirements (good grades, scores, sports, ECs) and don’t fail the medical or athletic test then you should make it. Most people don’t make it due to one of those last two reasons.

My son received a nomination, aced the athletic test, passed the medical and had good grades from a top prep school (particularly strong in math and physics), great SAT’s
(1400 back in the day of M & CR only), and an excellent interview. He was not accepted. My daughter, on the other hand, attended our local public school (notoriously weak) and graduated with a 3.1 GPA and not so great SAT’s (1600 three sections). She was a recruited athlete and was offered a nomination and flown out for an OV. Sad, right?

Sadly, a nomination does not mean you are in…but being a recruited athlete does!

Surprising. I know of people like your son who were offered slots at the prep school to wait for an open position the following year.

He was not given a reason why. In addition to his grades and test scores, he was also a three season athlete and a student leader (highest honor at his school). His particular boarding school is actually a school where Naval Academy students are sometimes asked by the academy to complete a PG year. He was not applying to Annapolis, however, but the Air Force Academy.

Wow, that is really surprising to hear that about your son. I guess I can just hope that I get an appointment. However, there is just one thing that I am really worried about and that is my SAT scores: C.R. (600), Math (560), and Writing (620) Will the academies accept that?

asko – the math 560 is very, very low for Annapolis and AFA. Might be OK for West Point which isn’t as into science/engineering.

^ DunninLA, I’m not sure where you got that idea. USMA has essentially the same core curriculum and USAFA and USNA (30 hours of engineering and hard sciences). Many graduates come out of the engineering programs (though I can’t find a breakout of how many by major). That math score would be problematic at all three schools.

ED: I infer from NROTC giving 85% of scholarships to engineering and physical science majors, AFROTC giving 100% scholarships only to Engineering majors, and AROTC not specifying a preference for engineering/science vs. other majors. Following the allocation of money by major generally leads back to core priorities.

Inference only… don’t know for a fact. I also note that SAT scores at the 25/75 at the academies go from Annapolis as the highest, AFA in the middle, and West Point the lowest of the three.

I was not surprised as we were told by several people (it was even in the Academy brochure) that a nomination is by no means a guarantee of admission. It is just one of the steps to getting there. He did received a full ROTC scholarship, though. (Engineering Physics major, then switched to Research Meteorology).
